Finally, some worthwhile advice,

This review is from: Raising Your Spirited Child Rev Ed: A Guide for Parents Whose Child Is More Intense, Sensitive, Perceptive, Persistent, and Energetic (Paperback)
For the past 3 years, I've read countless books and listened to healthcare professionals that told me to let my daughter 'cry it out', even to leave her lying in her own vomit, to push independance. Well, that probably is fine for a lot of children, but for 'spirited children', it's a different story. Until I read this book, I always felt like I was spoiling my child and was just being a sucker for giving in all the time. If you have a child that is spirited (intense, sensitive), this is a book you must read. If your child also has difficulty sleeping, I also recommend Kurcinka's book "Sleepless in America".

I think this book is really balanced. It talks about some of the emotional challenge that parents of difficult-to-parent children face. It talks about adjusting your parenting style to accommodate the child's needs while still putting limits. It talks about helping teach your child to fit into the world (for example, through asking for what they need rather than becoming upset or learning how to approach groups of other children quietly rather than just barging in). This is a book that helps me to look more closely at what is actually happening when my son and I get stuck butting heads. The section on introverts and extraverts helps me understand not just my son but my husband as well!

this book may have saved my sanity! there are lots of books that tell you how to raise kids but none of them seem to address the issues I was facing... I picked up the book to find tips on how to get my kid to be 'normal' but the book helped me see what an amazing kid I've got BECAUSE she is who she is! for any spirited parent of a spirited child this is a must have -- YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!

For five years I tried various approaches for dealing with my, ahem, spirited child. Then I stumbled upon this book and I saw the "light". It ain't perfect, but it is definitly better then it was. This is an invaluable book for all parents not just parents with "difficult" or "challenging" children. This is a must read for all.

My son is extremely sensitive. I knew from day one that he was different. He cried louder and more intensly; he had colic, dairy intolerance, reflux for the first 4 months. Teething just set him off balance completely and he just screamed for 2 hours at a time at night until he was 11 months old.He is now 16 months old and he is still very intense and sensitive. He sleeps much better at nigh...big relief!!! When I read this book, it hit me on so many levels. I realized that my husband is also spirited and this is where my son got it from. I took the spirited test and my son scored low on the Spirited Child index. This made me realize that things weren't as bad as I thought and that many other parents have it much worse than me. It helped me to accept my son's temperament. Now when my son climbs, I get up and climb with him. When my son spends the day crying, I look at him with more empathy and I'm able to stay more calm. When my son takes a Kleenex and hits me over the head with it and pulls my hair, I realize it's his sense of humor coming out and I am not quick to anger. This book has even helped me with my calm daughter. She is also very sensitive, but not spirited, and it has helped me learn to negotiate better with her and make her feel more confident in her ability to come up with her own solutions. When I realize that I'm being too angry with my kids, I think about this book and then I learn to appreciate their "spunk". I would highly recommend this book!
