5.0 out of 5 stars An escapist's dream!
Though I've only read a few Julia Quinn books, I have read A LOT of romance novels, and this is one I'll remember for a long while. I picked it up on a rainy Friday afternoon for some reading at the cottage and I'm glad I did. This is typical Cinderella and Prince Charming story , she poor and abused, he restored to power and wealth , nothing new really. But we all like these fairy tales and I started to read looking for some quiet quality time. The beginning was promising but somewhere in the middle something happen and I had a hard time to finished this book. There is no real spark between the main characters ( taking Grace to bed does not mean that Jack is really crazy about her) , all of sudden they are deeply in love like 2 people left in the desert and forced to each others arms . I think we as a readers deserve better from Ms. Quinn.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Grand Disappointment, July 9 2008
This review is from: The Lost Duke Of Wyndham (Mass Market Paperback)
The Lost Duke of Wyndham begins with promise but ultimately fails to deliver. I think it is time to admit that Julia Quinn, while talented, hit her peak with the Bridgerton series. Her books previous to the Bridgerton series were middle of the road romance and her subsequent novels prove to be no better. The heroine, Miss Grace Eversleigh, is as boring as potato pudding. I did not find her to bet particularly witty or humorous, as the book claimed. The hero, Jack Audley, while compelling, acts out of character in many situations and ultimately was unbelievable. The secondary characters had few shining moments and often behaved poorly. I was quite frankly, bored with this book. I expected better of Ms. Quinn. Go back and reread the Bridgerton series, don't bother with this novel.

Though I've only read a few Julia Quinn books, I have read A LOT of romance novels, and this is one I'll remember for a long while. I picked it up on a rainy Friday afternoon for some reading at the cottage and I'm glad I did. Julia has used her strengths in creating deeply-felt emotional connections between her characters and in writing quippy, realistic dialogue to produce a book that is sure to satisfy.

Grace is a single woman in genteel poverty who is toiling away at a thankless job for a demanding boss (who provides quite a few laughs by being the most extreme caricature of a spoiled aristocrat I've read in a long while). Grace and her boss, The Duchess, are accosted by a highwayman one night and immediately the Duchess is convinced he is her long-lost grandson. Grace is pulled into the inevitable conflict between Jack, the light-hearted adventurer, and his new found family. It sounds like a far fetched premise, but Julia makes it work by creating vivid characters who are a perfect match for each other. Jack is a more dashing hero than the usual romantic fare, and his love for Grace is so passionate, so immediate, it will take your breath away.

The Lost Duke is a great way to spend a weekend. Sure, you may have to suspend your disbelief now and then to believe some stretched coincidences, but isn't that what escapism is all about?

I too was disappointed in this book. I have all her books and was so looking forward to this one. It was quite a let down. I love JQ, she is my favorite author. It took me two weeks to read this book, i usually read a JQ book in at the most two days. I hope the next book in the sequel is better.
