2.0 out of 5 stars A good idea with a disappointing development, March 2 2012

Good god, Kevin, what were you thinking ?

I had high hopes for this book because it brought together the rich (if somewhat unstructured) universe of Superman and the talent of Kevin J Anderson whom I enjoyed with Brian Herbert's teaming in the Dune prequels.

Unfortunately, the characters are weaker and more two-dimensional than most modern comic books. Lara is so dumb that you get more attached to the antagonists. Krypton feels like you could drive there...

If it wasn't for some cute Superman references (from both comics and movies continuum), the unremarkable prose would be almost monotone.

All in all, it feels like a book that wants to fix a universe that probably cannot be completely fixed, building it on a very weak foundation: protagonists that are cliché (Jor-El the invested scientist, Lara the loving wife, Zod the sinister master of evil), a Krypton world that does not feel alien enough and a story that might have been told in half the pages.

A bit fun to read for Superman fans but not a great novel.
