the basic theme follows stephenson's usual: currencies. but the actual writing leave a lot to be desired compared to his other masterpieces. this book could have been written by any thriller authors and it would be unremarkable

I'm a fan of Stephenson's early writing. Snow Crash and Cryptonomicon are among my all time favourite novels. But his latest, REAMDE, is not worthy of his talent as a writer. The story is bloated with too many flat characters and hackneyed thriller twists that belong in a cheap Tom Clancy knock-off. This novel could have been edited in half. Its too long. It got very boring in the middle and I was tempted to put it down and move on to something better.

My advice, pass on this one. There are better novels out there. Don't waste your time on this weak effort.

I never thought I would accuse Neal Stephenson of writing a derivative uninspired thriller, but there it is...I just finished this and I'm heartily disappointed. It was more or less ok through the first half, but then it rapidly devolves into a long boring crime/thriller/terrorist schlock-fest which culminates in agonizing and tiresome shoot out that goes on for hundreds of pages. Riddled with cliched action sequences, flat characters, and pointless plot twists, this feels like Stephenson off the rails. The MMO economy as a money laundering system is cute, as are the Russian gentlemen mobsters, but it all adds up to a throw-away story that I won't even remember a year from now - definitely not something I can say for his inspired classics like Cryptonomicon or the Diamond Age.
