4.0 out of 5 stars The Art of Makeup
More for the aspiring makeup artist than the layperson. Good, but not a lot of everyday, practical information for the career woman. More for special occasions or specialized techniques. Lots of beautiful pictures featuring famous people made up in different styles.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a guidebook for the novice.
This is really the Art of make up. It doesn't give you step-by-step instructions for applications. It has great pictures of celebrities and autobiographical text by Aucoin. I thought it would help me learn more about make- up applications. I guess I wanted a face map. The pictures are great and he is an artist, but I didn't learn much from the book, other than...

5.0 out of 5 stars More than a coffee table book, Aug 24 2003

Beautiful! I loved this man's work, and this was a perfect showcase for the cream-of-the-crop best photos of his favorite subjects. There are plenty of larger-than-life photos of many celebrities (Susan Sarandon, Brooke Shields, Christy Turlington, Paula Porizkova, and my favorite Canadian (former)supermodel, Linda Evangelista....breathtaking!) There's also a section on basic make-up how-to's and tricks of the trade, and some great pics and anecdotes from him family life. (His mom and sisters were among the first to experience his craft) I bought this back in the mid-90's ... :) A must for anyone who loves make-up and all things beautiful. God bless Kevyn Aucoin, may he rest in peace.... he is missed.

=^,,^=

4.0 out of 5 stars The beginning of a legend, Aug 20 2003

Kevyn Aucoin is a truly inspiring figure and this first book of his is a great kick off to his coffee table book career! Its *alittle* dated at this point and you can tell when reading his other books that his techniques matured. But he inspired me to become a makeup artist and I still use this book as a reference on some points because its timeless and Kevyn is just a god of makeup!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure genius, Dec 2 2000
This review is from: The Art of Makeup (Paperback)
If Picasso had written a book ÒThe art of paintingÓ would anyone buy the book and think they could paint like Picasso, or would you have purchased the book to read about how a genius learned and practiced his craft? KevynÕs first book ÒThe Art of MakeupÓ is about the art of the craft had how Kevyn (and his mentors and predecessors) elevated putting on facepaint to an artform. As a freelance makeup artist I appreciated the book as a celebration of makeup and not a how to manual. Fortunately, KevynÕs second book ÒMaking FacesÓ is more of a makeup 101

5.0 out of 5 stars Make-up Bible, Nov 30 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Art of Makeup (Paperback)
I HIGHLY recommend this book. It has been on my make-up table since it first came out. The instructions are clear, the discussions about color, texture and application are down-to-earth and easily understood. Lots of fun to read, too. Kevin comes across as a really nice person who is passionate about his art. Cured me of my make-up phobia permanently.

4.0 out of 5 stars beautiful pictures,creative make-up and wondeerful makeovers, Aug 4 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Art of Makeup (Paperback)
I really like the pictures in this book, although I noticed that the instructions aren't complete so I recomend to look well at the pictures because they may include more make-up than you think. I personally prefer more variety in dramatic make-up for young people. But after all, it has become one of my favorites.
