This review is from: Practice Makes Perfect: German Verb Tenses (Paperback)
All the 'Practice Makes Perfect' books seem to provide lots and lots of practice. Although this seems an obvious statement, nothing is so important in picking up a foreign language than using it and repeating it and writing it. By writing, you engage one more learning level over mere oral repetition. The world is full of language texts that promise you'll be fluent in six weeks. You won't. You need to practise and repeat. As children we learned our own language through immitation and repetition. Unfortunately, when you must study on your own, the immitation portion doesn't exist. This makes repetition even more important. Not only does this book provide a lot of exercises, each set is not only progressive in verb tenses but also in vocabulary. As you go, you'd better have a dictionary at hand, and a notebook for picking up the new words. This book is focussed on verb usage; at the same time it also carries forward in complexity, and becomes a useful mini-course in itself. One of an excellent series of language texts for the self-taught. |
