5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding introduction to acounting basics
I routinely use accounting in my investing activities as well as my management activities and I have found this to be among the most insightful short accounts out there. Plenty of detail is provided and the programmed teaching format is highly effective. Although simple in its approach, it also has one of the best overall approaches to accounting that I have seen. 3.0 out of 5 stars Great for a beginner, Save your $ if you know any accounting
I bought this book in order to review prior to heading off to business school this fall. I majored in finance as an undergrad which involved two accounting classes. This limited background made this book of limited use as it was very basic in nature. If you have any accounting background, I would recommend you save your money and purchase a more advanced text. This...

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed!, Jan 8 2011
I am very disappointed that when I received this book in the mail and opened it, the left hand side was upside down and backwards, whereas the right hand side was normal. So I had to read the right hand side pages first, then turn the book upside down, and read the other side back-to-front. As I needed to get the reading done ASAP, I didn't bother asking for a new copy. I feel that this is very poor quality control by both the publisher and Amazon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to accounting, Jun 2 2004
By
This review is from: Essentials of Accounting and Post Test Booklet 8 (Paperback)
This is a solid easy to follow introduction to accounting. The repetitive fill-in the blank format can be annoying at first, but really helps one remember the basic principles of accounting. I was somewhat surprised by the "mad-libs" like approach to the material, but it definitely works.

I read this book before taking an introduction to financial acocounting class and found it very valuable.

Plenty of detail is provided and the programmed teaching format is highly effective. Although simple in its approach, it also has one of the best overall approaches to accounting that I have seen. Most accounting books make it difficult to see the forest for the trees. This book is just the opposite: it starts by showing you the forest. Highly recommended to those who need a good knowledge of accounting but do not wish to become accountants.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect as an introduction book!, Feb 15 2003

The book is required in our class of Finance as an introduction to the accounting system. It's quite easy to understand all the principles by doing the exercises yourself. And the special design of reverse printing and post tests are a big help. I had accounting class before and was often confused with debits and credits of whatever assets or liablities and equity. However, when I'm doing this book, everything is clear - there's considerable details to explain how to debit or credit any accounts. Simple introduction of non-profit organizations' financial statement also quite useful. Strongly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you have to learn accounting, try this book., Mar 9 2002
I needed a crash-course in accounting prior to starting my MBA. This book gave me what I needed to know so that I wasn't completely clueless on my first day of class. It was also a valuable reference tool throughout school, and a great way to prepare for final exams.

Learning accounting can be tough, but this book helps make it bearable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essentials of Accounting - My Review, Mar 7 2002

Having recieved and MBA a few years ago. This workbook was very helpful as a refresher on the key concepts with some very interesting and compeling leads for further study. One should have a some prior knowledge of basic accounting concepts, if not some of the topics may be overwhelming. The workbook reviews topics which can be very helpful to individuals who may be considering P&L responsibilities. The workbook clearly and concisely explains the relationship between the essential financial statements. The book makes the field of Accounting more interesting than my previous opinions. I would definitely recommend this book considering the conditions mentioned.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tedious, but with a point, Aug 16 2001
By

With no accounting background, I picked this book up prior to entering my first accounting class. This book is laid out as something of a workbook. It will describe or define something and then ask you to fill in the blank with the concept learned several times. The book progressively builds on the material it has covered, linking concepts together. At the end of every chapter is a review section. It moves from the most fundamental to the more advanced. Overall, a very good book. Be warned, it starts off painfully slowly, but picks up steam a few chapters in. A good book for someone who knowns nothing about accounting and financial statements and wants a basic understanding of how accounting views/treats things and of how financial statements articulate with one another.

Simply a fantastic introduction to the concepts and ideas. I have read a number of books on the subject, however, this book beats them all hands down.

I bought this book in order to review prior to heading off to business school this fall. I majored in finance as an undergrad which involved two accounting classes. This limited background made this book of limited use as it was very basic in nature. If you have any accounting background, I would recommend you save your money and purchase a more advanced text. This one took me approximately 4 hours to get through.

That being said, this book is fantastic for anyone with a limited accounting background. It is concise, well-written, and does a good job of explaining the basic concepts.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT SOURCE FOR TEACHING & LEARNING, Sep 28 2000
By
"itsfun" (Bristol, VA USA) - See all my reviews
Another book purchased to have in our office library for management and my assistant who is taking classes to become a certified accountant. She was excited to receive this book for it helped her understand some of the terms and questions not plainly spelled out in her accounting class. I found the review of this book to benefit myself as a refresher course. I plan to have our President, who is unwilling to learn accounting principles, read over this book to help him better understand the importantance of good financial practices. He thinks accounting is the least important part of his business. What will it take to have him be willing to learn? Hopefully this book will give him an easy way of learning without being over the top of his ability to understand accounting is very important. I think it will. No doubt about it. You will be glad to have this book in your library of accounting materials for home or business practices.
