5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!

3.0 out of 5 stars Semi-good story with a basic plot...
I never felt like I knew the characters when I read this book. Sam's personality was harsh, Jule's was timid and weak. I suppose a dancer would like this book more, and understand the role dancing plays in it more than I do, so a dancer might like it. Sam and Jules have always been best friends, and are entering senior year at high school together. Until something major...

4.0 out of 5 stars A time for dancing...., Jan 15 2004

This review is from: A Time for Dancing (Paperback)
This was a very good book. I really liked the ending and how it turned out. It was a really good story of a friendship. It was kind of different, but turned out to be really cool and interesting. This book was sad in places, but a heart felt story.
I guess you can never really under-estimate the power of a good friendship. It was sad how they werent as close as before. And it was sad, how the cancer changed the girls and her friends whole life.
I never thought that cancer could change you and put you against your friends and family. I hope that I dont get cancer.
Overall the book was really good and I recommend it to pretty much everyone. It was a little sad but I think thats what made it such a good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Time for Dancing, Oct 24 2002
This review is from: A Time for Dancing (Paperback)
A time for Dancing is a book that I would recommend to all my my friends. It's mostly about friendship and how two friends, Julie and Sam, keep their friendship intact. Through out the book, the author, Davida Wills Hurwin, makes you feel like you're there, listening to them speak. Watching them argue, and cry together.
Julie and Sam have been best friends since they can remember. They've told eachother everything. They have had their share of laughs, and tears. But this time, Its more than all of that put together. Julie was diagnosed with cancer.
Julie can't get through it alone, and luckily, she has Sam there to help her fight the cancer. It's a typical friendship story, only, with a lot of different twists.
I would recommend this to any one, and I actually already have had a few people read the book, and they too liked it as much as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome novel!!!, Jun 14 2004
This review is from: A Time for Dancing (Paperback)
Desperate to read a sad and interesting friendship novel this month? Well, A Time for Dancing by Davida Wills Hurwin, must be the right book for you! The two main characters, Samantha and Juliana, are best friends and one day Juliana is diagnosed with lymphoma, which is a type of cancer. As Juliana's life becomes a total disaster, her friends and boyfriend also starts to drift apart. This emotional and touching story will grasp the reader's attention from the very first page and never let go until the whole story is carved into our memory forever. I will definitely recommend this book to everyone and I also give this novel a rating of 5/5.

One reason why this is a great novel is the author's effective use of words. The author's fabulous descriptions had led me to tears especially near the ending when Samantha says goodbye to Juliana who was lying in the hospital bed, lifeless. Davida Wills Hurwin allows the reader to picture the character's situation really well. To understand how effective her words are, then you must read this novel.

Another thing that is done well in this book is the climax held within this novel. The climax occurs during the time when Juliana's whole life changes dramatically. She goes through depression, everything is falling apart, and most important of all, she could not dance the way she use to. This is a good place for the climax because Juliana's whole life was change the minute the doctor told her she was diagnosed with cancer.

Numerous readers find this book, A Time for Dancing, hard to put down. Losing hope, going through the battle of cancer, friendship, and death, this novel will change your opinions about this world. So what are you waiting for? Hurry and go to your nearest library or bookstore to read this touching novel!

This review is from: A Time for Dancing (Paperback)
I really liked this book.It may take a while for some to get into but by the end of the book it is hard to put down. Throughout the book one can feel the ups and the downs that Sam and Julie's relationship faces along with the emotions that both seem to be experiencing. The book also helps one realize the importance of friends. I would recommend this to anyone that knows what it is like to have a best friend that you would give anything for.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book, May 27 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: A Time for Dancing (Paperback)
I thought the book was great.I was crying 4 the whole ending ,but it is pretty hard to make me cry during a book and i think people who read this book would also like the author Lurlene McDaniel because she writes books like this. The book really makes you see a different perspective that authors dont usually show because they really dont know how sum1 would feel as a 17 year old who has terminal cancer.

In A Time For Dancing Jules gets cancer. Her best friend Samantha has always been there for her. They are suddenly drifting apart! It was spectacular to read, and a delightful bathtime cry-and-read-athon starter!

A Time for Dancing is one of the best books I have ever read. Its sweet and meaningful, and really makes you think. It changes points of view from Julie and Sam and its really interesting to enter the life of a cancer victim and her best friend. The book is sad, but I really like it, and I think that if you read it you would really like it, to!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Time for Dancing, Nov 6 2003

Samantha Sloyan (Catskill, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Time for Dancing (Paperback)
A Time for Dancing is a novel written by Davida Wills Hurwin. The novel received many good reviews and is an ALA Best Book for Young Adults.
Samantha and Jules have been best friends forever. Everything they do is with each other and they know each other inside and out.
The summer before senior year, Sam and Jules make big plans for their future and spend their summer days with friends at parties, and doing what they love most, dancing.
Both girls live for dancing and have grown up together learning it. After senior year they were suppose to be on tour with their company performing all the dances they practiced so long for.
Everything seems perfect when something unbelievable happens next. Julie is diagnosed with an un-curable cancer and is losing strength fast. Together, they battle the cancer, chemo, and life itself. Sam tries to help Julie live life to the fullest and Julie refuses all of Sams offers.
Through all their ups and downs, they both realize the depth of everything that is happening and learn how to act alive again. Sam and Julie are being torn apart but they still accomplish their dream, together.
I found this novel very emotional and deep. It has a strong meaning and it deals with everyday life. The book is unforgettable and it keeps your attention until the very last page.
The author uses good techniques. The book is full of interesting dialog and is written from both Sams and Julies point of view. There was a very interesting plot and set of events. The sensory language used by the author made you feel like you were part of the book and there fighting the cancer. The moral was a very important message and it creates an understanding that most people don't know, because they don't have this issue in their life.
