5.0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Guide
An outstanding guide to a highly complex subject. Readable, up to date, often funny, excellent explanation of the history of individual sites.
The centuries after the 5th CE are discussed, something which is new to me at least. The illustrations are sometimes hard to understand, but that is often a problem with Kindle.

2.0 out of 5 stars Impractical and poorly written
I had to buy this textbook for a class, but would never suggest buying it otherwise. The background information on Roman monuments was interesting, but the text was so poorly written (many spelling errors and, stylistically, painful to read). It is also huge and heavy. A good encyclopedia-type text, but not something you want to lug around Rome while sightseeing....

4.0 out of 5 stars Very useful, April 15 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a very useful archaeological guide to Rome, particularly for the central part of the ancient city. I wish that there were sections that included some of the peripheral areas and monuments in Rome's immediate peri-urban area, however.
