You must have this book whether or not you're writing a Ph.D. dissertation. It is simply thorough and approachable and will help anyone writing a paper or making an argument. I would recommend this book to grade schoolers! (Simplified, of course.) The methods herein, if everybody followed even some of them, would make the world a better informed, more intelligent place.
