I started reading this with my 6 year old. Awesome. I am getting him ready for the movie. The illustrations and the font are perfect for sharing it with him.

This is an amazing story, with such descriptive, rich langue, wonderfully developed characters and a simple, yet wonderfully executed plot, this is a book to be read, and then re-read, then read again. It draws you in and makes you feel as if you were really there with Bilbo, and Gandalf. As if you really feel the dragon's fiery breath on your cheeks as you soundlessly tiptoe down the massive corridors leading to it's horde. Truly, this is a fantastic book. Tolkien is a true genius.

I got this particular cover because it's the same as the one when I first read The Hobbit, back in grade 8. Great purchase for me and definitely worth it.

I already reviewed THE HOBBIT, but I'd thought I'd review THIS version. I doscovered Alan Lee & his paintings around Fall of 2002, wella fter I got my current editions of THE HOBBIT and LORD OF THE RINGS. D'oh. I'm still quite content with mine, but had I known about THESE versions I would've gone for them. This is the best edition of THE HOBBIT I've ever seen. I gave it four starts due to the size of the actual book. It's beautiful and all, just a little large. Best read on your lap, or sitting down at a table.

A classic, plain and simple. The illustrations are whimsical, sophisticated, and there are plenty of them. A nice copy printed on quality paper, this edition will stand up to many, many readings.

If you are a fan of Tolkien you know few things compare. I'm a huge fan of Tolkien's writing. I've read the complete history of middle-earth, the silimarillion, the lord of the rings and this wonderful novel. The Hobbit remains my favourite of all time. No modern writers even come close (perhaps Robert Stanek but that's different). Read this, you are going to love it!

This is a beautiful little hardcover version of a classic children's book.(Of course all true fans of the "Lord of the Rings" should read the Hobbit too!) The book is a nice compact size for children's hands. Included are all of Tolkien's delightful colour drawings and maps, including some I'd never seen before. There's also an interesting preface by J.R.R's son, Christopher Tolkien. (Hobbits first popped into Tolkein's mind to entertain young Christopher and his siblings.) This book would make a lovely gift for any child (from around age eight to eighty-eight!)

This book is by far my most favorite that I have ever read. The writing surpasses even Lord of the Rings. Everyone who ownes this book will surely wear it out before their lifetime.

I read it after Lord of the rings and I have to admit that I like it better! Probably I didn't read the songs because I wanted to know what came next and I don't look for songs in such a book, but every other person so far likes it...
Bottom line, read it! U'll know about gollum's origin,Bilbo the rogue (way younger),and a lot of funny dwarfs ( Gimli's dad included),greedy dragons, and U'll understand why Gandalf hesitates to enter Moria in Lord of the Rings...
