3.0 out of 5 stars I was a little disappointed...
I had the book when I was little (we called it Big Book). When I bought it for my son recently, I had the feeling that I remembered pages that weren't there: birds, flowers, buildings. I hunted up my old copy and sure enough, there were quite a few pages missing in the newer book. But nowhere in Joey's book does it say it's a revised edition! What's in the book is great,...

I owned many Richard Scarry books as a ltitle girl, so I was thrilled when we received several as a gift for my daughter. I introduced this book to her at about 12 months of age, and much to my surprise she immediately became obsessed with the book, the alphabet page in particular. I was so surpised by this, as she normally only has the attention span for interactive/lift-the-flap books, but her attention span regarding this book is a testament to how fabulous it is! In the last 2 months, she has come to like all of the pages, and it is a book she brings me everyday to read to her, turning around and plopping herself down in my lap for a good long read! I myself remember the cozy illustrations, especially the pages of little things and food. The book is loaded with words, opportunities for elaborating and describing in great detail, and in my opinion I think the title suits it well: it is the best word book ever! Don't miss out on this book, especially if you are looking for something to hold your child's attention for longer than 5 minutes!

I hunted up my old copy and sure enough, there were quite a few pages missing in the newer book. But nowhere in Joey's book does it say it's a revised edition! What's in the book is great, but I can't get rid of the feeling that we got gypped!

Another problem with the book is that it's not bound very well. All our Richard Scarry books seem to fall apart at the spine in very short order. It's true we read them constantly, but we read other books as often, and they don't fall apart as quickly.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Altered Classic, May 14 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever (Richard Scarry) (Library Binding)
Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever was a favorite in our family when we were growing up in the 1970's. I bought a new book to share with my one-year-old daughter and it has become one of her favorites. She will page through the book on her own, pointing at different objects in the book and naming them.

My big complaint is that the editors have made extensive changes to the original book. Not only are many pages missing, but there has been a great effort to change artwork and characters in deference to political correctness. Where I thought many of the original characters could be thought to be either male or female, the editors have decided that there were not enough characters that were obviously female, so they have gone back and stuck bows on their heads. It seems they fear that kids will think that women can't work in construction unless they depict a bear with a bow stuck to her head driving a roller. While I believe that little girls can dream of doing any of these occupations, I don't think you need a bow in your hair to be female and I don't think you need to mess with the author's original classic illustrations.

Of course, my daughter is not comparing the book to a previous superior version; she just loves it as it is.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little dissapointed, April 21 2000
This review is from: Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever (Richard Scarry) (Library Binding)
When my daughter recieved this book from my mother as a gift I thought back to when I got the same book when I was growing up. I enjoyed it then but I was a little dissapointed when the binding fell apart. Now 20 years later, I see not much about the this problem has changed. The book is very enjoyable. We must have looked at each of those pages hundreds of times. She was entertained with the simple animals doing every day activities such as bears getting dressed and elephants getting ready for bed. This was one of our most favorite bed time books until it fell apart.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a great BIG book. It is two feet tall and board book material. My 2 year old and his 3 year old cousin love opening it up, laying on it and looking through the great big pages. Great buy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding for all ages!, Nov 11 2002

This is the greatest book! I have taught 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade and have always had this book in my classroom. It is great for vocabulary building and just a fun way to get kids interested in books. My students of all ages gave it lots of wear, and it is still in good shape for my son to enjoy. He is now 18 months and ever since he was about 9 months has loved to sit on it and pat the pictures and now he is starting to name different things. It's really unique because of it's giant size (about 1.5'X2') and thick cardboard pages. I think it is well worth the price for the amout of enjoyment and wear you will get out of it! What a great gift too.

My daughter (1yr) loves to read, and this book is perfect for her! She'll get years of enjoyment from it. And she seemed pretty delighted by the fact that the book was quite a big bigger than her.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Son's All-Time Favourite!, Aug 27 2010
My son has spent hours and hours captivated by this book. I gave it to him when he was 18 months and he has been reading it every day for the past 5 months! In fact, there is no other toy or book that he has spent so much time with. I'm now looking for other (smaller) Richard Scarry books that we can take with us on our upcoming 10-hour flight. I hope they do wonders like this one, otherwise it will be a long trip.

My son, who is now 40 years old, had this book when he was about 2 years old. I used to read some of it every day to him, and we would laugh and talk about all of the pictures, and the words under each item. Soon, he could look at all the pages and "read" the words. I truly believe this book was the inspiration for his lifelong love of reading. Now, I buy this book for the grandchildren!
