Not what I thought,

This review is from: Cesar's Rules: Your Way to Train a Well-Behaved Dog (Paperback)
This book reads like an autobiography in part and a lot about different trainers and their style of training. There is next to nothing for someone looking for a hands on training book. If I had known this I would never have bought it, a waste of money. If you'd like to know about Cesar's life then its an interesting read but that's about it.

My dogs thank Cesar,
This review is from: Cesar's Rules: Your Way to Train a Well-Behaved Dog (Hardcover)
I ordered 2 of Cesar's books and finished Cesar's Way and loved it and my dogs are thankful. I have 3 horses, 2 dogs and a cat. Although I feel I know quite a bit about animals and training animals I learned a lot of very important things from this book. I now take my 2 dogs on long walks daily. I though playing ball and letting them loose in backyard was enough for them but Cesar stressed how important it is to let them be dogs and investigate new terrain + go for structed walks and be the pack leader. My dogs are better behaved, have better manners, seem happier and walk so much better without pulling. I am truly enjoying them more and am more aware of my own energy which will be very helpful esp. with my 2 year old half arabian. He tells us about his past and his dreams and goals and how he got to where he is. I found that interesting and very inspiring. Love him and his books and my animals and myself and everyone around me benefits. Buy his books and enjoy a better, deeper connection with your dogs. Less about Cesar, more about dogs,
This review is from: Cesar's Rules: Your Way to Train a Well-Behaved Dog (Hardcover)
This was my second Cesar Millan book- the first was "Cesar's Way".While it can be said that he has had a major impact on the world of dogs and dog owners, there is little in either of these books that gives you a step by step guide to training/raising a dog from puppy to adult dog. In fact it seems that what Cesar likes to talk about most is himself and his own success rehabilitating problem dogs. In both of these books the first half is about himself almost entirely and it's not THAT interesting. He also spends a little too much time defending his methods- whatever they are, because he is never specific- from his critics. This I found small minded, spiteful and unnecessary. Cesar Milan has created a cult of personality for himself and made a fortune in the process. The only thing I have learned from these books is that it is important to consider how your energy effects a dog and the importance of being a pack leader asserting calm leadership. This, however, is something that is common knowledge among most trainers. My biggest complaint is that his books are marketed as instructional guide books but in fact read more like an autobiography. I'm just NOT that interested in Cesar Millan, I just want specifics on how to raise my puppy. I guess I'll have to look elsewhere.

Outdated training methods,
By
This review is from: Cesar's Rules: Your Way to Train a Well-Behaved Dog (Paperback)
If you are interested in learning how dog training was done 70 years ago, please purchase Cesar Millan's work.If you are motivated to have a fun, engaging training relationship with your dog, avoid Cesar. Instead head on over to some researched based training methods that are promoted by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior. Support work done by Dr. Sophia Yin, Karen Pryor, Patricia McConnell and Temple Grandin. These women actually have published research into how we communicate with animals (instead of passing on the 'wisdom' of our ancestors'). They have the added benefit of working with over 100 species with their methods. That's right. Their methods are not about dominating animals but actually the science of learning. Need further referral? These are the experts that the American Military refer to when training their dogs. These are who veterinarians interested in the field of clinical behavior refer to. Hurray! There are better ways than Cesar's! |
