5.0 out of 5 stars Don't be misled!
This wonderful story picks up some characters from a previous story, Where the Roses Grow Wild. I almost didn't read it because of the other reviews, but they are wrong! "Portrait of My Heart" was a fun read. I enjoyed the characters very much. I have never read its prequel "Where Roses Grow Wild", but after being introduced to them in this story I find that Im curious and may have to go back and read Edward and Pegeen's story as well. While I found this book to be enjoyable..it isnt a keeper for me. First of all I...

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Portrait Of My Heart (Mass Market Paperback)
To the author's credit, the book's part one has the feel of adolescence. Two people have grown from childhood adversaries to youthful dreamers. Maggie Herbert dreams of studying art in Paris, her fantasy to become a famous painter. Jeremy Rawlings dreams of mystical India, his fantasy to become a soldier in the queen's Horse Guards. An embarrassing situation allows both of them to go for their aspirations.

Years pass and our two visionaries have achieved their fantasies. Maggie is an accepted artist and Jeremy is a decorated military hero. Simultaneously, they come back to England, and discover they can no longer deny their neglected passion. First introduced in Cabot's "Where Roses Grow Wild", each and everyone has witnessed "Mags" and "Jerry" evolve from childhood rivals into sultry lovers.

Patricia Cabot paves the road to love with gentle humor, thus rescuing her book. Jeremy Rawlings, the Duke of Rawlings can be a little trying. In other words, the world revolves around him. Maggie can be a little dense. In other words, HE can't possibly love me. Nevertheless, Cabot does fill these pages with effective comedy, and the reader will enjoy the lighter moments.

Problem areas:
* Jeremy's insane obsession to get Maggie into his bed.
* Maggie's inability to accept Jeremy's surrender.
* The entire business surrounding the mistaken "Jewel of Jaipur".

First of all I found it bothersome that while we are told that the characters do in fact love eachother, they never actually get around to telling one another..this is a small thing I realize, but it bothered me regardless. I also felt that towards the middle it dragged a bit and that the tension and the conflict that held the story together was so annoying because if these people had only communicated to eachother a bit more it could have been avoided..but then there wouldnt have been a story at all ...all in all a fun read, but not my favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, May 19 2002
This review is from: Portrait Of My Heart (Mass Market Paperback)
I found this book a delightful read. I, myself, am not at all fond of the tearjerker, cliche, or otherwise tasteless romance novels, which is why I typically steer clear of them. But this is a light-hearted novel that really fills a reader with a poignanat, sweet, and lamentful feeling(lamentful because romance can't really be like that). I suppose today's society has taken it's toll and fills oneself with a cynical attitude, but I literally laughed out loud of some of the ridiculous measures taken by the characters and the strange situations they found themselves in. Anyone who says this book has no substance but a laugh has little appreciation for the substance of humor. People are often very much like the two characters: impatient, "rushy", and very very stubborn. But when reading about characters like that, they tend to ridicule and say, "Now that's not believable. Why dont' they just. . . .It could be over so much quicker if. . ." Human being are not perfect(GASP). Our imperfections make a wonderful read. It's easy to guess the ending (they get married), but just to see them get there is hilarious. The characters are very believable and Cabot's humor is witty and charming. I recomend this book to anyone who wants to read about the whims of the human heart.

2.0 out of 5 stars NOT A KEEPER..., Jun 28 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Portrait Of My Heart (Mass Market Paperback)
I really enjoyed Cabot's first book-Where Roses Grow Wild. My enjoyment led me to buying An Improper Proposal and this one. I really did not enjoy this book as much as I did the other two. The characters in this book seemed pretty young and the plot was kind of slow. I liked the idea that the hero was so much in love with the heroine and for such a long period, but I didn't understand why she was such an idiot for playing games and getting engaged to someone else. That pretty much is the plot. I guess this wasn't a terrible book, but it is not one that I am planning to keep or read over. It was already difficult enough to finish this book the first time around.

4.0 out of 5 stars A sweet and charming book, Jun 9 2000
This review is from: Portrait Of My Heart (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a nice, light regency romance. The story is sweet. Jeremy and Maggie are nicely characterized. However, I just could not believe that Jeremy could fall in love with Maggie so fast and that Maggie could be so stubborn about her feelings for Jeremy and because of her stubornness she gets engaged with someone else!

But still, this book is sweet and a must read for regency romance fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars A *very* romantic comedy, Mar 17 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Portrait Of My Heart (Mass Market Paperback)
If you're looking for a tear-jerker, don't look here. But if what you want is a light, fun read--with a bit of spice!--this is the book for you. A historical romance with a very modern feel to it. I usually read contemporaries, but I'll definitely be trying more books by this author.

2.0 out of 5 stars PASS ON THIS BOOK, Feb 22 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Portrait Of My Heart (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was passable. I thought the two characters were very immature and did not merit their own story. They were playing at being in love and I did not find it entertaining. I have read Cabot's other 2 books and highly recommend those, but save your money and pass on this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sexy fun filled romp that you can't put down!, Jan 24 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Portrait Of My Heart (Mass Market Paperback)
What fun Potrait of My Heart is. The characters are colorful and filled with a feisty wit that is becoming Ms. Cabot's trademark. The locations are glorious in their descriptions, and the sex is steamy and provacative. The sexual tension between Maggie and Jeremy builds with each page and the plot twists keep the reader on the edge of their seats. Three cheers for a must read!
