Beautiful and fun book, but not as useful as "Making Faces",
By Denise Crawford (San Diego, California United States) - See all my reviews
Ce commentaire est de: Face Forward (Hardcover)
Aucoin produces yet another beautiful and fun book about the art of make up. However, Face Forward is much like Making Faces without the practical techniques. The book follows the same format as Making Faces without many improvements. The book begins with general articles about brows, lips, eyes, color, etc. However, these articles are truly general and only give written directions to achieve the looks in the photos. If you have the facial structures of the models, then these sections will be very useful to you! For the rest of us, I found the preliminary sections to be fun but not helpful. The next section entitled "Face to Face" is useful with many before and after photos. The techniques are written and illustrated by photos of the make-over subject throughout the process. The looks are very natural and complimentary to the different ethnicities featured. I wish there were more makeovers in this section! The final section entitled "Dimensions" features 48 different looks that are fun but not realistic for everyday use. In fact, most of the techniques demonstrated would only be useful for Halloween or a costume party. This section features many stars from Madonna to Tina Turner but offers little substantive content for everyday use. Being a make-up-a-holic, I found Making Faces the better buy of the two. If you have to choose, choose Aucoin's first book for practical use. For fun, this book definitely takes the cake.

Practical and fanciful makeup all in one book,

Kevyn Aucoin does a good job of showing women how to do everyday makeup, including highlighting and lowlighting areas to emphasize the positive and unique features of each person. The beauty of this book though is in illustrating how makeup can be used to transform one's face for stunning and whimsical looks. I would recommend this to someone who is familiar with makeup but would like to learn how powerful a tool it can be.

I know it has been said a million times but Kevyn Aucoin was a genius!I can't even tell you the amount of new looks and ideas I have got from Kevyn's books, the most inspiring thing about this man was the fact that he was completely self taught he never attended a school or a class to learn to apply makeup! His books and story give hope to anyone who dreams of becoming a makeup artist. As always Amazon, thanks for your lightning fast shipping, couldn't be happier:)

I agree with many of the other reviewers here who said that Kevin Aucoin is a "magician". He is truly an amazing artist and it is so nice to be able to get a glimpse of his world through this book.

Eye Candy!,

For those of us who love makeup, this is fun and inspires one to try something different! I wish I had time, patience, and the vision of Kevin Aucoin to do some of these transformations, even if just for fun. Along with demonstrating various "looks," he takes (mostly) famous faces and transforms them into others with makeup--for example, he turns Martha Stewart (!) into Veronica Lake, Amber Valetta becomes Clark Gable AND Carole Lombard, and Gina Gershon morphs into Sophia Loren. There are a few black women and fewer Asians, so if you are looking for a lot of diversity in this book, you may be disappointed. Still, I love this book, even though I don't actually wear as much makeup as is shown here. Some of never grow out of playing dress-up! Rest in peace, dear Kevin. You are missed.

A Star Is Born!,
By Duke Marine (Newbury Park, CA) - See all my reviews

Definately the pinnacle of Kevyn's star-studded career this book is DRIPPING in celebrities from cover to cover! Each super star poses as Kevyn's canvass and boy does he go wild! Highly creative, highly impressive, highly glamorous! The only problem of course being that you would need the face of a celebrity and the talent of Kevyn to pull off most of the looks! But oh well Kevyn showed his own star power in this book before his tragic and too-soon death. He will DEFINATELY be missed by film and fashion elite and by the millions of fans and acolytes he acquired!

Best of Aucoin's books.,

In preparation for doing my own makeup on my wedding day, I sought out various resources, which led me to Kevyn Aucoin's books. While not a self-help manual per se, this book shows the amazing transformations that can come as a result of makeup alone. I found it very useful for providing an overview of different techniques--for example, the effects of combining light/dark mouth with light/dark eyes; the use of neutral versus more dramatic colors; options for shaping brows, eyes, and lips; etc. While most of us will never come anywhere near Kevyn's skill level, this book provides at least a starting point for incorporating some professional tips into your own makeup routine.

I guarante you will look at this book more than once. I must admit it's more celebrity oritented than "Making Faces" and the directions for applications don't come with as many sketches , but the fabulous photography and the different looks are worth a 5 star rating.

I absolutely loved this book. I would recommend it to all people interested in the Make-up industry. Kevyn Aucoin was extremely talented. It was rewarding to see celebrities having different looks while comparing what they usually look like with it. He also explains how to get that "look"

Favorite of Aucoin's books,

This is my favorite of Kevyn Aucoin's three books (The Art of Makeup and Making Faces are his two others). Face Forward has simple practical suggests as to the application of make-up. It goes step-by-step, start with the moisturizer, then so on.It shows many different styles and has beautiful models (including Julia Roberts-my favorite). It is motivating, simple and works. Has models of every skin and hair tone imaginable. I am an absolute beginner at this - actually his books were the first fashion books I've ever owned. I've never even read a fashion magazine, either, so I feel confident that any one can find his books helpful. |
