This is a relatively good book if you're a complete beginner and learn by practicing.
Covers the basics of Flash, so you'll need another book if you need to go deeper.
This book covers a lot of different, medium size examples.
For one big example, i.e. creating a website in Flash from a to z, try Flash CS3 Visual Quickproject.
For a more advanced book or a reference book, go with Flash CS3 Visual Quickstart. When you're ready to go with ActionScript, try the Flash CS3 Professional Advanced Visual Quickpro.

I had only just learned Dreamweaver and wanted to learn Flash as well. It's a difficult program to learn, but this book really does a great job as a substitution for an actual classroom. I've been able to create dynamic websites and fun animations. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to learn Flash, but doesn't know where to begin.
