Misleading Title,
By A Customer
This review is from: Foods That Cause You To Lose Weight: The Negative Calorie Effect (Mass Market Paperback)
This book should have been called "Foods That Cause You to Become a Vegetarian". It's all about how bad animal products are for you and why you shouldn't eat meat or dairy products. The menus and recipes in the back are 99.9% vegetarian. If 'broccoli burritos' make your mouth water, then this is the book for you. I fully understand that meat doesn't have a "negative calorie effect", but there should have been a disclaimer that this book was from the vegetarian point of view and it wouldn't contain any information about how to integrate "the foods that cause you to lose weight" into any diet. However, the book was fairly inexpensive so it's hard to complain too much ....

I found this book to be very helpful. After just having a baby and gaining close to 100 pounds, I was hopeless that I would ever get back to my pre-pregnancy weight, since January I have lose twenty three pounds just by following these guidelines. I am now starting to see the old me and it is extremely motivating.

Become a vegetarian and save yourself the trouble of buying,

this book. I don't understand the other reviewers, it's as if we received two different books. I am well read on food combining, fasting, vegetarianism, etc. and found this book to be one of the worst. Negative calories is a plausible concept but don't look to this book to really help you. You'll feel ripped off just by thumbing through the book. Just eat your veggies and cut out all that red meat and you'll do wonders for yourself.

This book has drastically changed my life. I was suferring from migraine headaches and just by learning about the common trigger foods versus the safe foods helped me for life! I used to have a migraine headache almost every week, but since I have eliminated from my life Chocolate, Dairy products, Red meats COMPLETELY, as well as many more from the common trigger foods, I've lost 20 lbs, took vitamins, and have never, ever felt better! Thanks so much Dr. Barnard. I am a big advocate of this book for anyone who experiences physical pain.

This is a common sense book. It's easy to follow, no measuring, counting calories. No eliminating breads like some other diets. I love my pasta and my bread. You can eat this all you want. I lost 10 pounds the first week. Basic concept: no meat, no dairy (except skim milk)

A book that challenges lo-carbo dieting,
By Shoppergirl "Leng" (Singapore) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Foods That Cause You To Lose Weight: The Negative Calorie Effect (Mass Market Paperback)
Have any readers of diet books ever felt like crying when they read contradicting recommendations by doctors/authors? Some say hi-protein and fats with lo-carbo, others say hi-carbo and lo fats and protein. Who should we laymen believe???I am no doctor, and in all these books, their explanations for advocating some particular diet make sense. The sole problem is that when put together, one contradicts another! It is attrocious when one reads a book on hi-protein which says studies have shown that a low fat diet doesn't work and another book says that studies have shown that the low fat diet produce sustainable weight loss, and a high protein diet is DANGEROUS. Why are the results of studies so contradictory? Who is right???? Dr. Barnard is an advocator of low fat diets. He brings into discussion the well-known food pyramid, and the Asian's way of food consumption. However, one is so confused. Should we try this low fat diet even after reading all the hi-protein books chiding the defects of the former? I simply can't decide sanely anymore.

Well, big fat duh! (pardon the pun),

I saw this book online and borrowed it from the library. So very glad I didn't purchase it! When I read on page 12 that "your metabolism is like the rate at which a car uses up gas; an idling car uses some fuel, but when it runs, especially uphill, it burns more. Our bodies work the same way", I slapped my forehead. No kidding! Basically, as long as you're a vegetarian, you can follow this diet. It berates the effects of animal protein and fats and lauds complex carbohydrates as the secret to weight loss. I guess it all depends on how your body responds to carbs. If you can fill up on rice or potatoes with legumes as your source of protein without having your bloodsugar plummet, maybe this book is for you. Personally, I do better on a diet that is balanced with lean protein, fruits and veggies, and a minimal amount of monounsaturated fats (such as olives, macadamia nuts, natural peanut butter, avocados, etc.). If you want to know more about a vegan diet, then get a book that deals specifically with that topic. Skip this one. |
