tedious,
By A Customer
This review is from: He Could Be The One Mm (Mass Market Paperback)
The problem with romantic comedy plots is that too many authors writing for the genre have no sense of humor. Or else their humor is so tedious it has the reader pulling her hair out. That was certainly the case with Bevarly. The thought that two grown women are so obsessed with events/people from high school twenty years earlier is really quite pathetic. An entire book around that premise is excruciating. The entire plot is one contrivance after another. This author needs to study up on writing men. Men do not talk like that!!! The two guys in the story were indistinguishable from each other when they spoke, as were all the flat cardboard characters. It's interesting to note that the only people who gave this book a good review are other writers. Certainly the readers weren't fooled in this instance.

Not the One!,

This review is from: He Could Be The One Mm (Mass Market Paperback)
I enjoyed the first Elizabeth Bevarly mainstream novel and even those published by Silhouette. However, these last few have missed the mark. "He Could be the One" should not have been published as a mass market mainstream novel. The plot is flimsy and was held together by the author repeating the heroine's thoughts and speech repeatedly in order to stretch the story. While Eve and Wyatt's story could have been fantastic if given the proper depth, this rendition only left a disappointed fan. I sensed the secondary character, Eve's sister Simone, might get a story of her own. If so, lets hope the author takes the time to develop the story more fully before going to market. I would suggest buying this used or waiting for a paperback exchange at your local library. I probably won't make another purchase unless I read the reviews first.

DON'T PAY FULL PRICE FOR THIS ONE!,

This is not a keeper. I'm not saying throw it back, just don't pay full price for this book. The story would have worked much better had EB limited her use of "uh", "eh", "um", "mmm", "hmm", and "gee." A little of this and the reader thinks it's cute, but too much will drive you crazy. To make matters worse, the hero is primarily the guilty party. Instead of making him endearing, he comes across as being inept. Let's hope this isn't a trend which EB plans to adopt for future books. If you haven't read "How To Trap A Tycoon". . .do so. It's EB at her best.

What Happened?,

I have always enjoyed every book by Elizabeth Bevarly because each book she writes is unique and let's face it; she has different style that sets her apart from other authors. So what happened? For some reason, He Could Be the One, reads like a million other romance books I've read over the years. The concept of the book sounded good, but the story never reached out and engulfed me like her books have in the past.Eve Van Dormer is the beautiful twin everyone remembers. In high school she had the hots for Wyatt Culver. She all but throws herself at his feet on prom night. Instead of taking advantage of her offer, Wyatt walks away without a word. Eve, the one everyone thought would be on top of the world and come out ahead, makes some poor choices that change the course of her life. Fast-forward several years--Eve is determined to take her life back starting by attending her class reunion. Simone Van Dormer, Eve's twin, was the girl no one noticed. She also had big plans on the night of her prom. She throws herself at the boy of her dreams but has different consequences to face. Like Eve, she is determined to go to her class reunion and face down her demons. Wyatt Culver and Julian Varga, private detectives and body guards hired by millionaire Luther Van Dormer to protect his two prized possessions. Luther had taken his daughters and left in the middle of the night after the prom because of a threat to himself and his girls. He knows he can't stop them from returning to their hometown or class reunion, but he is bound and determine to send them with the best protection he can. The two main characters Eve and Wyatt did nothing for me. I could have cared less about their story. Eve seemed wimpy and Wyatt came off as an overgrown kid who never grew up. However, on the other side, I really enjoyed the story about Simone and Julian. I really wish the book had been about them. Each has a secret about their past that is hard for them to face. Each has gone on to make something out of their lives. I don't know what went wrong with this book. It's not bad, but it's not up to Ms. Bevarly usual standards. Look at it this way, if you don't start this book with the high expectations that it is a book by Elizabeth Bevarly, it will probably be a passable romance book. But, if you start out expecting the same standards associated with Ms. Bevarly's previous novels, you will probably end up disappointed like I did.

Elizabeth Bevarly must have the inside track to a guy's mind! This book is full of great "guy-stuff" and I couldn't put it down. I took it on vacation and even the ocean breezes and the warm water couldn't tempt my nose out of the book until I'd turned the last page.Don't miss it!

What a Disappointment,

This review is from: He Could Be The One Mm (Mass Market Paperback)
The story of twin sisters, Eve and Simone Van Dormer, returning to their birth place of Cincinnati, Ohio for their 20-year high school class reunion after being spirited away to California by their paranoid father a week after their prom who feared for their lives after being threatened because of a business deal gone bad. The twins are adamant about returning to their reunion so their worried father hires a bodyguard for each of them to protect them from a potential threat on their lives. Each twin has a separate secret about prom night that perhaps had something to do with the women they've become. The storyline was very slow and mostly uninteresting (it took me an entire week to finish this novel and that's including skipping over pages). I will admit the last 30 pages were the only appealing points throughout the entire novel when it is discovered that Eve and Simone's lives may really be in jeopardy concluding that the threats are not because of their father's paranoia. I loved Ms. Bevarly's My Man Pendleton, Her Man Friday and How to Trap a Tycoon but I have to admit "He Could Be the One" was a total disappointment and a waste of time and money. Looking forward to the next release.

Elizabeth Bevarly has done it again with her latest, He Could Be The One. Actually, this time, she goes beyond her usual witty dialogue and funny situations to present characters who really feel. The tale revolves around the reunion of a high school couple, Evie and Wyatt, who were never quite sweet hearts, but somehow knew their destiny was entwined. Separated by circumstances, a threat to Evie brings them together. Twenty years have gone by, and each has changed in fundamental ways. But a road trip across America to their 20th high school reunion reveals the ways in which each is actually funadamentally the same. As satisfying as this love story is, the reader gets a bonus, with a happy ending for Evie's sister as well. While the story brought tears to my eyes at times, it also has plenty of Bevarly's trademark humor. The unfortunate choices in alternate identities Wyatt and Evie take on when crashing another high school's reunion had me laughing out loud. This was truly the funniest scene I've read this year. In short, this is one you'll want to enjoy again and again.

Another captivating charmer from Elizabeth Bevarly!,
This review is from: He Could Be The One Mm (Mass Market Paperback)
HE COULD BE THE ONE was a blast of a book. I caught myself laughing out loud over the snappy dialogue and keen wit and nearly fell off the couch when Evie and Wyatt crashed the wrong reunion. But contrary to what some of the reviews may lead you to believe, the book is not just a fun romp. With an amazingly deft touch, Ms. Bevarly peels away her characters' defenses to reveal the complex relationships and histories that they share. The dialogue between both couples rings so true that you feel them falling in love and know beyond the shadow of a doubt that their futures together will be bright ones. HE COULD BE THE ONE is my favorite kind of book--a romantic comedy with heart.

Fantastic romance-A must read,

This review is from: He Could Be The One Mm (Mass Market Paperback)
Two decades ago, eccentric multimillionaire businessman Luther Van Dormer abruptly left Cincinnati suburb Woodhaven with his two daughters in hand. He resettled in California. Now he calls Wyatt Culver, who took his daughter Eve to the prom that night before she relocated, asking him to kidnap his daughter so she will not attend her high school reunion. Luther fears for the safety of his beloved children in their hometown after a deal went sour years ago.Private investigator Wyatt Culver and his partner Julian Varga reluctantly agree to the abduction. Although he knows what a spitfire Eve was, Wyatt was not prepared for the wild woman driving him crazy. Even stranger is the reaction between Julian and Eve's sister Simone. As the two sleuths struggle to keep their charges abducted and safe, they fall in love with the siblings who know that these men could be the ones for them. HE COULD BE THE ONE is an amusing romantic suspense romp that will remind readers of classic movies like "Bringing Up Baby". The story line combines angst, humor, and intrigue into a wonderful plot. The four key characters and their interactions make the wild ride seems genuine, touching, and just fun to follow. Elizabeth Bevarly has written a contemporary winner. Harriet Klausner |
