Simply the Best Book on child-rearing,
By
This review is from: How To Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk (Paperback)
As a parent of two young children I can't recommend this book highly enough. If you want to make the world a better place, buy some copies of this and give them to everyone you know who has children. But make sure you read it yourself first. This is how I first came across it, and this is what I now do, having read it. You see, the problem is we're programmed to treat our children in the ways we were treated ourselves. Often, its the negative comments that have the most impact, and these are what we repeat without noticing it. In order to learn to relate to children as human beings, we need to unlearn a lot of stuff. This book helps readers to do just that. Sometimes its difficult, because it can entail a whole new way of relating and of being. The good news is that it actually works. I have been there. I would also recommend How to Talk so Kids can Learn... and Siblings without Rivalry, for the same reason: the ideas and advice in them work, and they compliment this book without duplicating it.

The Best Parenting Book I've Read,
By Ms Diva "cycworker" (Nanaimo, B.C. Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How To Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk (Paperback)
If you have time to read only one book on how to deal with children, let it be this one. Although it was over 200 pages I read it in a day, because it was so good. This book is written in a really clear fashion. The techniques are easy to use, and the language is simple without being condescending. The authors cover discipline, sharing feelings, how to give useful praise, and a variety of other subjects. It's useful not only for parents, but for anyone who has contact with kids. I've seen an improvement in my interactions with kids in only a few short weeks.

Essential for anyone in contact with kids!,

This book is a must for anyone who has contact with kids. I have used the principles advocated in "How to Talk..." as a nanny, especially as a preschool teacher, and with family members consistently since I read the book. I highly recommend purchasing this one for yourself. I borrowed it the first time I read it, and then couldn't wait to own my own copy to refer to again and again! This book is a great way of becoming more self-aware, and recognizing better ways to be present with the children in your life.

Real ideas for real people!,

This review is from: How To Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk (Paperback)
Wow! What a great book. It gives such realistic advice and the authors really seem to know how a family really works. (Not like some books for parents that present examples that sound like a sitcom with a happy ending!) The only wierd thing about the book is that it's quite old and some of the examples are dated. But dated or not, the ideas really truly work. The book gives simple, easy to follow advice on what to say and how to say it so that your kids get along better with each other and with you too. If you like the ideas in this book you'll also like another brand new book called Hidden Messages - What Our Words and Actions are Really Telling Our Children. I'd recommend both of these to any parent of a child from toddlers all the way up to teenagers.

These skills saved my life!,
This review is from: How To Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk (Paperback)
Please, do your kids AND yourself sanity a favor. These skills should be required High School material! The world would be a much better place if everyone grew up with parents who knew and used these skills!

Mastermind of Psychological Warfare For Anybody,

This review is from: How To Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk (Paperback)
This book is not only applicable for adult to child but also excellent for adult to adult. I am always sceptical of child pyschologist and thier pure theoretical pyscological behavior models. This has proven to be our savior. Try it with your child after you have read the first 25 pages. Believe it or not, our child has responded positively to our (adults) changed behavior. It does not work all the time but I would say in seventy percent of the cases where our child went into a temper tantrum, they lasted no longer than 1 to 2 minutes. What a relief this book has brought to the atmosphere in our family. Thank you very much.

The most terrific book about everyday situations with our kids. Easy and logical to understand for everybody. If you want to know what goes on in your children's life, this book offers the tools. After practising the ideas for two weeks I can proudly say we have less arguing, tantrums and misunderstandings. A big "Thank you" to the author for sharing her experiences.

This is one of the better parenting books I've read. It will tell parents how to open up their line of communication with their children, especially the two to six-year-old. Sibling Without Rivalry, by Adele Faber, is just as helpful, but more for the older kids. Both books are by the same authors and are worth the money!

Works Just As Well With Adults As It Does With Children.,

This review is from: How To Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk (Paperback)
I first read this book as a psychology major in college, and found that the principles it discusses work just as well with adults as it does with children. Portions of the book have given me great success in dealing with difficult coworkers. It helped me to overcome some problematic situations with my wife as well. Shh - It's still my little secret.
