I truly loved reading this book. I have heard so much about Danielle Steel books and thought I would give it a try with this book and it was a complete joy to read... It was so quick and easy to read I loved the characters it would be wonderful to see if there is a follow up to this book to see what happens after pascale has her baby.... 3.0 out of 5 stars Too short!
I am a big fan of Danielle Steel's books, but I thought this one was too short. It was an okay book, but at the end it left you wondering what happened after that.

1.0 out of 5 stars How did this get published?, July 2 2004
By A Customer
After reading this book, I am pretty sure that this woman gets her work published just because "Danielle Steel" will be on the cover which means some following of hers will automatically purchase it. I am serious when I say it was predictable and painful to read. I am totally turned off and will NEVER read another one of Steel's boring novels.

4.0 out of 5 stars I personally liked it!, Mar 28 2004

I haven't seen such a book with mixed reviews such as this one, so I decided to throw my two cents in for what it is worth. The book follows Danielle Steels usual upper class romance with "famous" characters and plentiful wealth. I enjoyed this book and found it quite humorous and touching. Steel's formulaic characters are starting to get a little old, and I believe she should try something new.

1.0 out of 5 stars Simply Atrocious, Feb 19 2004
This is the first book of Danielle Steel which I read after yearss. May be I would have read a couple before. But I did not seem to remember any of them.By mistake I took this book and thought that I would give it a try.But it was simply atrocious. After about 50 pages I just could not go on.But generally I dont leave a book half read.So I completed it.The story revolves around three boring old couples and their trip to a place called St.Tropez.These 3 couples are supposed to be the best of friends.Although this point will be stretched in every point of the book,as a reader having read many books you would never feel so.And how they spend time at St.Tropez(which is written in such a lackluster way) forms the story.Oh gosh!I just wanted to try her book. But never will I try reading Steel's books again!May be some of her other books may be good. But after reading this book, one would never attempt to try another one of hers!

1.0 out of 5 stars Yawn, Dec 15 2003

Here we go again. Everytime I give my sister-in-law's taste in fiction the benefit of the doubt, she loans me another lemon. I read one other Steel novel a few years ago, and honestly don't remember the writing being this poor. I think perhaps Steel may be using ghost writers since she is winging it on her bestseller reputation. Nonetheless, I suffered through it so I could explain in detail to my sister-in-law why Steel novels are so cliche, boring, and inundated with cookie-cutter characters.

I am not trying to personally offend Steel fans, I just chalk it up to some people really do like this sort of stuff (or fluff). I'm just glad I didn't actually purchase this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Totally Predictable, Aug 27 2003

Danielle Steel's writing has really slipped over the years. She's cranking out novels at an unbelievable speed and her writing is not nearly what it used to be. When I first started reading her books 20 years ago, they really swept me away and into the story. Some were a tad predictable, but still very engrossing and interesting. Anymore, her stories are completely predictable, with no twists and turns at all. I didn't enjoy this one much at all!

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful!, Aug 23 2003

I also gave this one star since zero was not an option. This was very dissappointing! I have read many of Danielle Steel's books and enjoyed them. This seems like it was written just to get another book out. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

2.0 out of 5 stars Blah, July 18 2003

I was looking for a nice little romance to escape with and I was in O'Hare airport with nothing much to do. I saw this on the shelf & that this author had sold hundreds of millions of books. I figured that many people couldn't be wrong. Hmm.

The first thing that turned me off right away was that there was a character with the same first name as mine. Unfortunately, this character fares extremely poorly in the book. I suppose it's not really fair of me to dislike the book for that. I mean the character who does worst in the book has to have some name, but I just couldn't let it go. So much for escape from my own problems.

Another thing that annoyed me was that one of the characters was characterized as a "superior court judge" in New York City. Now, if you know anything about law in New York, you know that there is no such position in New York State. The position that corresponds to "superior court judge" in other states is called "supreme court justice" here. (The court that we have that would be called "supreme court" in other states is called "court of appeals.") Why does New York have to be different like this? Who knows? But then everyone always knew New York was different from the rest of the coutnry. Now you may say that this is a petty point, but it seems to me that, if you're an author with a big following and you know you might have yet another best-selling book and you know a lot of your book is going to be set in New York City, you could bother to research these things just a tad just so, in case some of your readers ever go looking for a court in New York City, they might end up in the right place.

Now sitting back from my personal vendetta, I have to say that it was a light and easy read, so I suppose I got a bit of an escape from it. The reading level here is probably barely fifth grade. The characters were pretty well developed, using short, uncomplicated sentences. There weren't any complicated concepts here. I would say Harry Potter is probably a more challenging read. Still, the thing kept my attention, mostly because it was short and I just sailed on through.

It was nice that the characters were happy, older people. It's nice to see a romance where everyone isn't a kid.

I found the ending abrupt and contrived, but, fortunately, happy.

I don't know if I would get another book by this author... maybe in a pinch, in an airport, if I'm desperate. But I would certainly look for alternatives.

1.0 out of 5 stars Gave it one star only because zero stars was not an option., July 7 2003

I've never understood how Danielle Steel can sell so many books. The few books of hers which I've tried to read have left me scratching my head as to how she can continue to get published AND have best-sellers.

Sunset in St. Tropez caught my eye at the library because of its brightly-colored cover. Since I was looking for a good summer read, the words "St. Tropez" intrigued me. The plot sounded good, and this novel, unlike so many others of hers, wasn't unduly long, nor did the plot involve a big, complicated family's hardships/trials/tribulations spanning 80 years or more. (Not a fan of the epic).
It didn't take long for her writing to grate on my nerves. How many times in the first two chapters did she hit the reader over the head with the fact that "the six friends" did this or that, and "the six of them" liked this or that. I got so sick and tired of reading the phrase, "the six of them" that I put the book down and didn't pick it up for two whole days (something I rarely do). When I did resume reading, I was faced with more bad writing, boring dialogue, and events that I can only presume were supposed to surprise me and intrigue me enough to keep me reading.
That did not happen.
I admit it: I could not finish this book. Maybe somewhere along the way the novel redeems itself, but as far as I could tell it is just another tale spun by Ms. Steel that's as unimpressive as her others.
Must be nice to have such great connections in the publishing world.
