Disappointing,
This review is from: Jazz (Book Only, Student Edition) (Paperback)
Scott DeVeaux and Gary Giddins thoroughly sanitize jazz in this opinionated, poorly organized survey of its history. The subject of jazz is approached with a distinct Western Classical slant, and the author's favouritism of certain styles is constantly apparent (the FIVE PAGES dedicated to Weather Report begin with a statement proclaiming the band to be "the most artistically and commercially successful fusion group of the 1970s"). The included listening guides are patronizingly detailed, and often undermine the mood and feel of the pieces they dissect in favour of micro-analysis. JAZZ caters to those who wish to approach the genre using the same skill set one would apply to the study of baroque music. At least the photography is excellent.
