Theoretically sound, highly flawed in application.,
By David Vaughan (Seattle, WA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Eat Right 4 Your Type: The Individualized Diet Solution (Hardcover)
Well ...D'Adamo's attempt at practical application of a theory fails in many ways: 1. He doesn't distinguish between blood group sub-types A1 & A2 or A1B & A2B. Regions of origin and therefore (according to his own argument) micronutrient requirements and proper macronutrient ratios of these sub-types are hugely different. 2. He has done very little (if any) independent testing to prove his lectin reactions occur as described. In fact almost no testing has been done by anyone. 3. He has plagiarized the work of Laura Power, PhD, who is the real expert on this topic. She has much more knowledge, experience, and most importantly - a huge, long-term study with clear results to prove her case. The truth revealed by Power is very, very different than D'Adamo's claims. 4. He does not account for (or apparently even understand) fundamental metabolic control mechanisms. If you lose weight with his system it will be quite by accident - or dumb luck. I have been a medical nutritionist for many years and I assure you that the failings of D'Adamo's system are glaringly obvious to a trained nutritionist. His is a blatant commercial venture to capitalize on public ignorance by presenting a plausible theory as fact.

Are you a Secretor or a Non-secretor?,
By "amarouk" (Levittown, NY USA) - See all my reviews

These terms may mean nothing to you before you have read this extremely helpful book. But there's a test to take (a saliva test) that will give you the next level of information beyond your Blood Type. Only LIVE RIGHT FOR YOUR TYPE gives you the different Secretor diets. For example, a Blood Type B Secretor can eat white potatoes; a Non-Secretor cannot. This is valuable information. Only 15-20% of the population are Non-Secretors, but if you fall into this category, you want to make sure that you have that information before diving headfirst into the diet and expecting it to make a huge difference. You can begin without that knowledge and just by eliminating the AVOID foods for your Blood Type, you do begin to feel better. To feel great, if you are a Non-Secretor, you need LIVE RIGHT FOR YOUR TYPE.

EASY to follow, Simply Miraculous,
By loopy (Shorewood, WI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Eat Right 4 Your Type: The Individualized Diet Solution (Hardcover)
By now, most people have heard of this book-at least in passing. I have to say a few words about this book that have been, at least in recent reviews, unmentioned. This book began by observation-in other words, true science. It has been tested and retested, and although admittedly there is probably much more to discover in this area, this is a damn good start and definitely enough to go by. I wonder how many people who have written reviews actually READ the book. Some act with skepticism towards the premise-that your blood type is a significant factor in how your body metabolizes food and absorbs nutrients. The book tells the story of our ancestors and how adaptation/evolution caused changes in different types of people and the effects of certain foods-whether they act as poison or medicine. It is loosely based on the most beneficial dietary approach our ancestors could have used. For the people who have a hard time with this approach and/or have not seen results, have a look at your raw food vs cooked food consumption, portions, and your consumption of certain modern substances that are unnatural and hence would not have been available to our ancestors: refined sugars, processed foods, genetically engineered food, hydrogenated oils, etc. I am 99% sure that THIS is the reason people say "What, ME do this??? That's ridiculous!" They are simply unaware of the dangers of these substances are and/or simply unwilling to cut out that bag of doritos. That is their choice to make-along with the choice to be toxic, obese, moody (notice the nasty tone of their reviews), and generally not at optimal health. There is no one easy answer as to why one human's food is another's poison. As you will read for yourself, there are many variables that comprise the meat of this book. If you want to be lean, energetic, and running in your most optimal mode, buy this book. Then actually READ it. Give it a chance. Start out slowly-begin eliminating the "avoid" foods (the 'poisons'), gradually increase your extremely beneficial foods, and of course eat the neutral foods as well. And SEE for yourself. YES it takes self discipline. But perhaps by cutting down your refined sugar intake you can maintain stable blood sugar levels and chill out about it all. Develop self discipline. Then watch it turn into healthful preference. What can I say-I have seen the evidence-it WORKS if you work at it. Good luck, I truly hope you will buy this book and watch your life change. p.s.-the exercise recommendations are based on sedentary people, and do not discuss strength training, which *everyone* (YES women too!) needs.

Utter nonsense,
By A Customer
This review is from: Eat Right 4 Your Type: The Individualized Diet Solution (Hardcover)
I knew this book was a load of bull when I looked at the list of foods to avoid and foods recommended for my blood type (A+). At one time in my life, in a misguided effort to reduce below the weight Nature intended me to be, I tried all the current fad diets, and the high-carb, low-protein diet was a disaster: I felt weak all the time and had no energy. (To be fair, the high-protein, no-carb diet was just as bad!) I concluded, finally, that I was healthiest when I ate a balanced diet, exercised regularly, and accepted the shape that I was born with. But nobody wants to believe that: we're looking for the "magic pill" that will transform us all into hunks or supermodels, and anyone who writes a book purporting to be that magic pill is almost guaranteed to have a best-seller.As for all the readers who think this book is wonderful, my years of dieting experience have led me to the following conclusions: (1) Any fad diet will work for anyone for a while. (2) Any fad diet will work permanently for SOME people. (3) No fad diet will work permanently for everyone. I'd like to talk to those enthusiasts 5 years from now, and see how many of them are still following the "blood type" diet and how well it's working; my guess would be about 5% for both questions.

Seriously Flawed,

I'm sure that given enough time, if the blood type diets are followed correctly they can work for many. However; if they do work, it is partly because the author advocates the elimination of highly processed and refined foods in favor of a more natural organic food diet. More importantly though, is the lack of scientific evidence from the author, who claims that these diets work for the stated reasons. My own personal investigation of these claims, shows that some information is completely missing and some of it has been twisted to fit the authors paradigm. As an A blood type, the high carbohydrate diet, as advocated by ER4YT, had some undesirable results for me, such as weight gain, and an unacceptable rise in blood cholesterol and triglycerides.I would suggest, that if you are looking for scientific evidence of the relevance of the blood type diets, to read Human Blood Cells: Consequences of Genetic Polymorphisms and Variations, Imperial College Press, by editor May-Jean King. Steve Henry and Bo Samuelsson both PhD scientists, and experts in this area, have devoted an entire chapter on the ABO polymorphism that explains the irrelevance of the blood type diets.

Happy to get the book and it is in good shape. The delivery time took a long time (almost a month)to get from the U.S. to Canada. It's the postal system in both countries and has nothing to do with the seller. The book is awesome and was worth waiting for. The price was incredibly good!

Hey, This Just Might Work!,

I commiserate with all those who found the science sadly lacking in this book, but for someone like me who is looking for a reasonably healthy eating plan that they can actually stick to for more than a few days, this book may be a Godsend. In the ONE short week since I began following the food guidelines for Type O, my energy level has shot up, virtually overnight. So far, my blood sugar is rock solid in spite of the dramatic reduction in the size of my meals and the amount of fat I'm consuming. In short, I'm already starting to feel GOOD! I can't speak for the other blood types, but it appears that the Type O food plan (possibly because of the complete removal of wheat from the diet) is going to be a winner - for me, at least. And in spite of the controversy surrounding the science of it all, my pragmatic bottom line is: if it works for me, I'm for it!

Life and Health Improving,

I had been a vegetarian for a few years, and my energy level was low. I also was having digestion problems, specifically acid reflux. There were some other problems also. A friend told me about this book, and I bless her. I bought the book, and it was a revelation. I started eating according to the book for my "O" type. I feel a lot better. Half my maternal grandmother's stomach was removed because of bleeding ulcers. Now I don't have to deal with that, just eat right for my type. I am very happy and thankful Dr D'Adamo wrote the books.

I recently finished Eat Right for a second time to be sure that I was selecting the right foods for my blood type and to understand more about the D'Adamo research. Well, the verdict is in...I've tried the highly beneficial, the neutral and the avoid foods alone and found that I have exactly the types of reactions that were stated in the book. With the beneficial and neutral foods I can exercise longer without breathing problems. With the avoid foods I break out in hives, wow who knew!!! Highly beneficial information, great piece of work.
