not helpful for early miscarriage,
By A Customer
This review is from: Pregnancy After a Loss (Paperback)
I miscarried at 10wks and did not feel this book was helpful. My feelings of loss were not validated by the author as the majority of her example were of 3rh trimester miscarriages, stillbirth, or infant deaths. I would recommend reading "Trying Again" to couples experiencing an early pregnancy loss.

Comfort,
By Tara (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pregnancy After a Loss (Paperback)
To start, I want to say I would recommend this book to everyone who has suffered a loss and is pregnant. C. Lanham covers every single feeling you might have and talks about them honestly. After receiving several self help books, along with advice from people who had NO idea what I was going through, this book offered me some comfort. I hated every book I read about infant loss and I resented every person who thought they had something wonderfully new to help my husband and I through our loss. After almost a year of trying for another baby, we finally got pregnant -- along with this pregnancy was fear and the grieving did not automatically stop. I did not suddenly want to see other's babies. I had many feelings and emotions, and this book was amazing. During our loss, I was tired of being told we were "normal" to feel the way we did. That was of NO comfort to me. Suddenly, being told I was normal when I had many strange thoughts and feelings (at this stage... after finally being pregnant again) and being told I was normal WAS a comfort to me. Thank you Carol Lanham for writing this book and helping me through a difficult time. Even my parents don't understand about what I am feeling and how I am acting. I have asked them to read parts of this book to help them understand. I would recommend it to everyone.

Not helpful for miscarriage,
By "betsy2@kc.rr.com" (Kansas USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pregnancy After a Loss (Paperback)
I recently had a miscarriage at 7 weeks. I bought this book because the title addressed miscarriage. The author experienced the death of her baby one day before it was born. No matter how she tried to include the aspects related to miscarriage, that is not what her experience was based on. I feel like there is a world of difference between a miscarriage and the death of a baby that you have a funeral for. I found myself feeling so sad for people who lose babies later in pregnancy and shortly after birth and not seeing the connection between miscarriage. I realize that this book may be more helpful to me after I get pregnant again, but for now it has gone on the bookshelf.

Pregnancy After A Loss - - An insightful book...,
By L Manhas (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pregnancy After a Loss (Paperback)
At 34 weeks gestation my little girl's (Elizabeth) heart stopped beating. This was my first pregnancy and my husband and I did not foresee something like this happening. This book was recommended to me not because I was pregnant again, but instead the individual who recommended it to me said it helped her with her emotions through her loss. I am so thankful it was recommended! It is an easy read that you get consumed with. It travels through all of the emotions your are going through after a loss and it also touches on the emotions you are feeling about getting pregnant again (and on how you will feel should you try for another pregnancy). The only thing I would have hoped for (perhaps the author should write another book) would be more on how the male counterpart feels with the loss and how to help them cope with it. Should this tragedy happen to anyone I know, I would recommend the book to them (but I hope it doesn't happen to anyone at all).

a lifesaver!,

After delivering stillborn twin boys at 21 weeks, I needed a guide to bring me through my next pregnancy. This book was a lifesaver. The author has suffered a fullterm stillbirth, so she truly relates the feelings that we go through during our subsequent pregnancies. There is detailed info on when to get pregnant again, high risk pregnancies and each trimester. Best of all, everyone interviewed for the book has gone on to deliver a healthy baby after suffering some sort of loss, which brought great hope to me. This is a must read for everyone in my subsequent pregnancy support group!

I read this book right after I gave birth to a baby at 22 weeks pregnant. I had an incompetant cervix. I thought the book was good in that it spoke a lot to emotions etc. however I was hoping for more information about cerclage and effectiveness of it and typically what happens etc.

This book was an incredible walk through the grief of losing a child and the hope of having another one. It didn't judge or recommend one path it just gave the reader ways to make her own decisions and examine her own feelings.

Portions of the book were very helpful...,

About 5 months ago I had a miscarriage, and now I am pregnant again. I thought that getting pregnant again would bring back the blissful feeling of that first pregnancy, but instead, the feelings were fear and anxiety. I was having bad dreams and thinking the worst. This book helped me to realize a lot of feelings that I didn't even realize that I had, and as a result, I have a better perspective on the situation. I can honestly say that I am moving forward with this pregnancy on a much more positive note. However, there were many women in the book that had gone thru more traumatic experiences much later in their pregnancies, (and I am counting the days till I get to 12 weeks and supposedly "safe"!) so those portions gave me new worries that I hadn't even thought about. It is a very good book, very comforting to hear of all the women that have gone on to have successful pregnancies, but it is wise to quickly skim over the parts that don't pertain to your situation, though. Also, an index would have been good, as some one else said, to help you to quickly find information.

a wonderful book,

This book has helped to keep me sane after I lost my son, my only child, at 28 weeks (he was stillborn). It covers so many of the issues that women who are contemplating pregnancy after a loss are unfortunately faced with--from listing specific causes of pregnancy loss, to gently & reasuringly guiding a pregnant woman (who has previously lost a child) through each anxiety-ridden trimester. I especially like the in-depth chapter on high risk pregnancies, as I am considered high risk & have trouble finding good information for coping with high risk pregnancy. A very well-written, heart-felt book that is both emotionally comforting and informative. A must-have!
