Stellar read, Juil 27 2004
Par Un client
Three very entertaining books that I've read this summer were John Grisham's "Bleachers," Jackson McCrae's "The Bark of the Dogwood," and this book. All were great and while the Grafton is my favorite, I also would recommend the McCrae.

Satisfying and Worth the Wait, Juil 19 2004
What begins as an easy assignment, pick up and babysit a newly paroled embezzler, turns out to be complicated. Kinsey is hired by an ailing octogenarian to pick up his daughter Reba from the correctional facility and babysit her for a few days until she gets settled. From day one Kinsey suspects there is more the Reba than what she is telling. And, it seems Reba, rather than Kinsey is the one calling all the shots.Meanwhile, Henry and his brothers drive each other crazy, Rosie is bossy as usual and Kinsey has a little romance. Ms. Grafton does not disappoint with Kinsey's latest adventure. Ricochet is a fast-paced investigation in which she plays the supporting role. As usual the story is well researched and interesting. Kinsey eats QPs and makes friends with Reba - it is nice to see Kinsey have a gal pal.

R should be for Reba..., Juil 17 2004
...because she's the likable criminal introduced here. Kinsey Millhone is hired merely to retrieve Reba from prison and deliver her charge to her wealthy father's home. But the two women connect, and Kinsey becomes an ally while Reba seeks to right personal wrongs. Perhaps it's about time Kinsey had a real female friend to hang with. The only other woman present in her daily life is Rosie, the Hungarian restauranteur who dismisses orders and instead shoves plates of her own chosen fare before customers. In spite of Kinsey's best judgment, she follows Reba. At the same time, our favorite private investigator is also beginning to date a cop named Cheney. Hurray! She needs both of these relationships. I hope they continue in future books. The details of an embezzlement and money-laundering scheme aren't as action-packed as other cases Kinsey has handled in the past, but they're still engaging. I welcome some of the descriptions because I've never been to California or Nevada to see the landscape for myself. Also refreshing is our return to the year 1987, when over-reliance on computers has not yet taken hold, and when Kinsey scarfs down Quarter Pounders with Cheese and Egg McMuffins with such intensity, it's as if someday someone would question their nutritional value and/or healthiness! You go, girl! At first I intended to give this title a 4-star rating. That was before I read the last 30 pages. Grafton need not apologize for this installment in the series.

excellent, Juil 15 2004
If you like L is for Lawless, you will love this one. Not as much technical stuff weighing it down. Good characters, great sleuthing, Kinsey in all of her glory. I enjoyed it. It was a perfect summer read. Now I just have to go back and figure out where Cheney appeared before.....

Superb entry, Juil 15 2004
Santa Teresa private detective Kinsey Millhone is hired by wealthy Nord Lafferty to pick up his daughter at the California Institute for Women and get her through the first few days of freedom. Out on parole, Reba takes to Kinsey and the two women go out to dinner together when her former boss Alan "Beck" Beckwith arrives at the restaurant. He invites himself to have a drink with the two women and Kinsey knows she has been set up by a pro.She pretends to leave but watches them making love in the back seat of Beck's car. Kinsey does not understand this tryst because he is the person Reba embezzled the funds from and never made restitution. Reba believes that she and Beck are going to run away together but the Feds are closing in on him for money laundering. They have pictures of Beck in bed with her boss's friend and regardless of the consequences, Reba is determined to get even with him but the authorities want Reba to help them their way . Kinsey wants to stop her before she goes too far and is put back in prison but can she get through to the woman she has come to care about in time. Readers are not going to believe what happens to Kinsey in R IS FOR RICOCHET. She becomes involved with a man and it looks like the relationship might last at least one more book. Even though Reba breaks the law and the rules set down by her parole officer, readers, like Kinsey, cannot help but care for the vulnerable waif with steel for a spine. Once again, this author shows that S G stands for Superb and Great. Harriet Klausner
