The Help is an improbable story of black housekeepers (the help, pronounced "hep") putting their necks in a noose to assist our hero, the protagonist--white naturally--make her career as a writer. The fact that the protagonist has for most of her life been close friends with one of Jackson, Mississippi's most racist women--and this is 1963, mind you--doesn't make this cotton fluff go down any easier for anyone with experience of American apartheid. Finally, the denouement stretches the mind beyond ludicrous. One word of caution: no black maid in 1963 Mississippi ever got away with insulting any white woman. The notion that she could hold that woman over a barrel by "revealing" anything overlooks the vicious history of the racist South. Night riders in sheets were always available to whip her within an inch or so of her life--or worse, if necessary.
