Hunger Games is just a rip off of Battle Royale, a Japanese novel from the late '90s. Hunger Games takes Battle Royale's themes and totally white washes the shock horror for a more mundane crowd who wouldn't know cutting edge if it stabbed them in the face. The other thing about Battle Royale is that the Japanese army did use child labour during WW2. Also, the Japanese school system especially at the high school level is ruthless, giving BR another edge and the book speaks to this incredibly.

There's no cultural purpose for writing this story in the West. It's just pure shock value stupidity for the same illiterate lamos who loved Harry P. (big time suck) and Twilight.

Go read Janine, 1982 or Coin Locker Babies instead. You can read can't you?
