5.0 out of 5 stars So funny, we had to stop reading sometimes
I personally love Roddy Doyle's novels. The Irish author normally writes adult fiction, so when I ran across The Giggler Treatment, I scooped it up for my seven year old son. 2.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother with this book
Roddy Doyle should keep to his adult books and quit the children's book realm. The Giggler Treatment is an irritating, mindless, dog poo-centered collection of pages. As a reviewer of children's books and a child psychologist, I found really nothing that would recommend this book to parents. I'm sorry if I'm spoiling the 5-star ratings other readers are awarding Mr...

I personally love Roddy Doyle's novels. The Irish author normally writes adult fiction, so when I ran across The Giggler Treatment, I scooped it up for my seven year old son. That night, I started reading it to him and, well, let's just say the humour was right up his alley. The story had both of us laughing our heads off. This is a story that he was quite capable of reading himself, but we could not resist the fun of reading it together. It is the first in a trilogy called 'The Rover Adventures.'

The entire story takes place in the few moments it takes Mister Mack to step, or not step (I don't want to give the ending away), in a mound of dog poo. This sounds unlikely, but Roddy Doyle pulls it off beautifully. He creates a wonderful tension and children cannot wait to read the next chapter as Mister Mack's foot inches its way closer to the poo.

Where does this poo come from? Well, it turns out that there are Gigglers out there, who cannot be seen because they can expertly camouflage themselves. Their mission is to punish adults who are mean to children by making them step in dog poo, and a large amount of this dog poo comes from an obliging, and now rich, dog named Rover.

There is so much in this story for kids to love: poo, punishing adults, Gigglers who are on their side, silliness, page turning tension and lots of laughs. When we were done, my son started making a list of the friends he wanted to lend it to. To me, that is the best recommendation, to have enjoyed a book so much that you cannot wait to share it with others.

Hint: if your child likes and can read Captain Underpants, they will probably like this. But it is not only for boys, several of the girls in my son's class have read The Giggler Treatment and loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and adventurous!, Jun 21 2006

If you like adventures, The Giggler Treatment would be good to read because it is adventurous, mysterious, unpredictable and very funny.

The Giggler Treatment is about these little gigglers that are Rover's friends that help him put poo on the path of adults that are being mean to their kids. When Mr. Mack's boys are playing soccer and break the glass window with the soccer ball, Mister Mack starts getting really, really, really angry and sends the kids up to their rooms. Do you think mister Mack will get the treatment (a.k.a., poo on the path)?

Then in Rover Saves Christmas, Rudolph gets sick with the flu and he can't pull the sled with Santa to give gifts to the children, and then Rover replaces Rudolph.

The third book is called The Meanwhile Adventures, but I've only read half of it.

My opinion would be this is a really, really good series to read because it's interesting and funny and easy to understand.

I love this book because it is very funny. If you haven't read it I highly recommend it to you. I have two little brothers and I read it to them and they both loved it. My favorite part is when Mr. Mack has his interesting breakfast. Oh boy, I wish I could have that breakfast every morning! I picked this book because I love funny books.

I read this with my children last summer, but 6 months later we are all still talking (and laughing) about it. While a story built around dog poo might not seem like quality literature in the making, this is truly one of the funniest, most inventive children's books I have ever read. A clever and witty tale - highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Giggly Funny..., Aug 10 2003
This review is from: The Giggler Treatment (Mass Market Paperback)
I had purchased this book a while back and took it with me so I had something to read while I was out at the laundry mat. Too Cute. I couldn't put it down. I liked how the Gigglers come to the kids rescue all over the world. Its too funny the dog Rover was the main helper, for both the rescue and the punishment. I have never read a childrens book like this. This is a definate must to have in your child's book case.

5.0 out of 5 stars Giggled To Tears..., Aug 10 2003
This review is from: The Giggler Treatment (Mass Market Paperback)
I purchased this book a while back at our local bookstore and I picked it out of my bookcase to read while I was at the laundry mat. I could not put this cute book down. I loved the Gigglers. Rover was the super hero of the day saving Mr. Mack. I thought it was a very cool book about how adults always do stupid things with out knowing ahead of time. Wonder if they really are around??!!

We came across this book by accident at our local library and thought we'd give it a try. What fun! I haven't enjoyed a book this well in a long time. I read it with my 8 year old son and we had tears of laughter! We went right back for 'Rover Saves Christmas' even though it was May and are anxiously waiting a new story. What a fun way of writing this author presents, tickling the imagination as you wander with him through the story!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Giggler Treatment is very very Funny!, Jun 20 2003
This review is from: The Giggler Treatment (Mass Market Paperback)
Mr. Mack is about to step in a piece of poo - supplied by Rover (the dog next door) - and placed by the gigglers....

Day dreaming of birds and biscuits (cookies)... will he step in it? Or will he be saved from his about to step in poop fate?? A glorious and very silly romp, this book is great for anyone who wants a laugh out loud giggle treatment of their own.

WARNING: 100% Kid Humor. May cause headaches to adults due to an abundant use of Kid Logic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gloriously Rude and Fun, April 1 2003
This review is from: The Giggler Treatment (Hardcover)
It occurred to me after reading The Giggler Treatment by Roddy Doyle, the Irish and the English have a rare gift for scatological humor which we Americans can only dream of. Indeed I never thought poo could be such fun. It certainly wasn't much fun when Anne Marie Golden threw a rather large chunk at me during playground in the third grade. Perhaps if I had thrown the poo back I might have found a dose of Doyle's inspiration. What is a Giggler? A Giggler is a furry mythical creature whose sole purpose is to right the wrongs done to children by their parents. How are these wrongs corrected? A Giggler makes mom and dad step in poo. Mr. Mack works at the local biscuit factory. The Gigglers have mistakenly targeted him for a dip. It is up to his children, and the talking dog who lives next door to the Mack's, to save their father. (The Gigglers give a six pence to the dog every time they need a batch. He hides the money in his dog bones)Mr. Doyle has imbued The Giggler Treatment with wit and charm to spare. Chapters have names like "This Chapter Is Named After Elvis Presley Because He Lives Under The Shed In Our Back Garden." Add a dose of the persecuted child along with a bit of scatological humor and you have the makings of a very successful book for children. I don't recommend everyone try this formula. It takes a truly skilled author like Roddy Doyle to pull it off.
