4.0 out of 5 stars Only the darkness in it kept this from getting 5 stars
All Through the Night is an engrossing read. Jack is a compelling hero: dark, dangerous, deadly, and a perfect gentleman. Anne is a tortured heroine: smart, lovely, guilt-ridden, and hiding a shocking alter-ego. Jack is wonderful in his early openly admitted need for her. Anne, knowing more than he does, is more reticent. In fact, she eventually hurts him on purpose to...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great storyline but...
I thought this storyline was a 5+, the physical encounters were a sizzling 10, and I really liked the characters. However, much of the writing was just so stiff that I found it rather distracting. I mean, how many people "think thus"? I certainly appreciate historical accuracy and I understand that part of Jack's charm is his gentlemanly behavior juxtaposed...

In fact, she eventually hurts him on purpose to push him away. In fear and anger, they each resort to using sex as a weapon--one of the dark portions of this book--but in the end, they come to terms with the dangerous, dark world of their pasts and leave it behind for a new world of light and love.

Brockway's writing is at times poetic as she decribes scenes and characters, particularly where Jack is concerned. The shadows of London are superbly portrayed and offer an interesting juxtaposition to the glowing entertainments of the ton. Exceptionally well-written.

I thought this storyline was a 5+, the physical encounters were a sizzling 10, and I really liked the characters. However, much of the writing was just so stiff that I found it rather distracting. I mean, how many people "think thus"? I certainly appreciate historical accuracy and I understand that part of Jack's charm is his gentlemanly behavior juxtaposed against the dichotomy of his rough background. Nevertheless, something just didn't flow. It was still a nice story. I just see where it could have been so much more with a more fluid, poetic writing style.

3.0 out of 5 stars Didn't Do It For Me, Jan 11 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: All Through the Night (Mass Market Paperback)
I bought this book because of the rave reviews on this site, but I have to say, I didn't find the dark complexity that others did. I found a trite, silly and implausible premise - the lady cat burglar thing, ho-hum - that was redeemed slightly by some better than average characterizations. But brilliance? Hardly. If you are a junkie and need your fix, this book ought to provide a satisfactory buzz. But if you are a connosieur, you've got to stick with Laura Kinsale.

Better than average read. She is a lady by day tormented by the mental scars left by dead husband, by night a cat burgular, stealing from the Tons richest people. He is the man sent to catch her.

I liked her well drawn characters that make you care about what is going on. Had a hard time putting this one down.

What an amazing book!! I loved the plot, the characters, Ms. Brockway's writing style...everything just fell into place...and the sex scenes were sooo steamy!! WHEW!!! Jack was such a compelling mixture of strength, vulnerability, and controlled sexuality ...you just want to scoop him up from the pages and make him your own...Anne was fantastically brave and self sufficiant....I HIGHLY recommend reading this...FABULOUS story!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Smouldering Sensuality, Aug 22 2003

Connie Brockway's rich and evocative vocabulary, together with her equally rich and complex characters, is again evident here. Like all her novels, All Through the Night is a joy to read, all the more so because of the amazing smoldering sensuality between main characters Anne and Jack. My only complaint is that some of Anne's actions don't ring true, leading to some plot contrivances. However, I still highly recommend the thrilling rollercoaster ride the book sweeps the reader into.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Tormented Passionate Couple, Jan 30 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: All Through the Night (Mass Market Paperback)
Jack and Anne will go down in romance history as one of the most unusual couples to grace the pages of a book: the hero is not noble and the heroine is a danger junkie. There are layers of psychology going on in their complex and uneasy relationship that one does not often find between the pages of a romance novel. The heat from their mutual obsession scorches the pages before turning into a fabulous love. This story lingers in the reader's memory long after the final chapter is done. Very highly recommended for the reader that wants something a little edgy in their romances.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot, hot, hot!, Jan 28 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: All Through the Night (Mass Market Paperback)
This was my first Connie Brockway, and it has me hooked for life. The burglar-heroine is brave and intelligent, and the sexual obsession she shares with the hero is so hot the book sizzles! I was panting for these people to get together, and that scene where he teased her while she was in the chair ... wow! Lovers of Linda Howard will adore this book. A must buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars a definite keeper, Dec 20 2002

This review is from: All Through the Night (Mass Market Paperback)
This book has depth and subtlty of feeling this is not often found. It has an interesting, unusual heroine in Anne, and a sense of real emotional connection between her and Jack. You read this book and you care for the characters, you want them to get together and when it ends you hope you will meet them again some day.

It is something about redemption and what is real love and what makes us want to live or die... more depth than average and certainly not a light confection, but worth spending time with. A definite keeper. I think it's Connie Brockway's personal best.

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit too proper for me, Sep 1 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: All Through the Night (Mass Market Paperback)
The book, though well written, did not inspire great loyalty for any of the characters. What could have been a terrific alpha male turned out to be a tall, muscular stuffed shirt. Every word and action reeked of manners. I knew that the book was a disappointment when even the thefts seemed proper.
