3.0 out of 5 stars an OK read...
This books main point was an interesting one....but certain things about the book were sort of strange. For instance, the fact that the main character has romantic involvement with two of her mother's old flames is something that I really had a hard time getting past. Also, during most of the book, the main character gets NOTHING accomplished, and most of the interesting...

4.0 out of 5 stars train commute reader, April 26 2002

This review is from: Best Kept Secrets (Mass Market Paperback)
I did enjoy this book. I found the characters very intriguing, expecially Celina's. Though, the relationships Alex developed with the other characters were a little unreal at times. (Alex, a lawyer investigating her mother's murder, goes into this quite blindly, with such a lack of information to begin with. It makes me mad that the very people she supsects, she socializes with as though they were family friends. Even goes as far as to seek "special" comfort and throw herself at her mom's old flame who happens to be a suspect?????) Given that, when reading the book you can all somewhat understand where 'most' of these characters are coming from. I guess I liked it more for the mystery of Celina's character and drama, don't get me wrong, the romance scenes were mucho caliente. If I had liked this Alex character better, the book would have gotten 5 stars.

I laughed and cried lots of tears. Best Kept Secrets wouldn't let me put it down. It was a perfect mix of suspense and mystery.

This books main point was an interesting one....but certain things about the book were sort of strange. For instance, the fact that the main character has romantic involvement with two of her mother's old flames is something that I really had a hard time getting past. Also, during most of the book, the main character gets NOTHING accomplished, and most of the interesting points are within the last 50 pages of the novel. Although Sandra Brown ALWAYS has interesting story lines, and this is not an exception, it was just hard for me personally to get past some of the points of the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another page turner by Sandra Brown, Dec 29 2003

I love all of Sandra Brown's books and this one goes near the top of my list of all time favorites! I honestly could not put this book down...I read the entire book in 1 day. As soon as you thought you had the plot figured out you were given yet another twist. Excellent story and writing by Sandra Brown yet again. I highly recommend this book to all of Sandra's fans!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read, Sep 30 2008
This review is from: Best Kept Secrets (Mass Market Paperback)
Again a very good read by SB. The plot is interesting, but Alex seems to not be able to accomplish much as the book progresses...but she persists.

It is not clear what motivates Reede for most of the time except that he loved ALex's mother once and the reader keeps thinking he can't be the murderer....
Also it was not clear if Alex keeps pushing because she wants the ugly truth or because if she leaves, she will not see Reede again.

I found it kind of strange that the three main male characters, who were all in love with the mother 20 years ago, never tried to find the real murderer...like they all wanted her dead..spooky, but still entertaining.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Kept Secrets, Jun 8 2004

This review is from: Best Kept Secrets (Mass Market Paperback)
Alex Gaither, Assistant District Attorney, talks her boss into letting her go back to her mother's childhood town to reopen the case of her mother's murder. Alex believes the wrong man was convicted of the crime and she wants to find the real killer and bring him to justice. On her return to Purcell, Texas she meets up with the other three main characters in the story. Angus Minton and his son Junior, one of her mother's close friends, and Reede Lambert, the Sheriff of the county and her mother's other close friend. Alex suspects one of these three is the real murderer and she wants the truth about her mother's murder. These three men, all influential in the area, have many secrets to keep and do not want to help Alex in any way. In fact, they want her to hightail it back to Austin where she belongs. Alex won't give up and begins the investigation into the murder. Secrets will be unveiled and lives changed forever as she searches for the truth.

This was a good book with an excellent storyline. Ms. Brown delivers twists and turns with each chapter. The reader is never bored with the story because it's constantly changing. Just when you think you know who the murderer is something happens to make you change your mind. The characters are somewhat believable. One can understand Alex's need to find her mother's killer and bring them to justice. One aspect of the book I disliked was Alex's attraction to Junior and Reede. These men are old enough to be her father and whom she suspects killed her mother yet she is attracted to them. This aspect fits into the storyline to help develop the plot but I just found it too weird. The ending of the book is weak too. With the whole story being what it is the ending seemed to be a let down. I was a little disappointed in the ending Ms. Brown chose.

It took me a little over two weeks to read this book because I was sick and couldn't read much. I feel though if I hadn't been sick I would have read this book in one to two days. It was hard to put down because I wanted to find out who the killer was. This is definitely a book I would recommend. It's a great mystery/romance to keep you on the edge of your seat.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best, but not the worst, Dec 30 2002
This review is from: Best Kept Secrets (Mass Market Paperback)
I thought Best Kept Secrets was an all right novel. It definately wasn't one of Sandra Brown's best, but it's not the worst thing in the world to read either. I would recommend this one for a rainy afternoon when you have nothing else to do. Normally, once I begin on of Ms. Brown's novels, it's hard for me to put it down, but this one was fairly easy to quit reading and do other things. It just seemed to drag on and on about the same thing over and over.
