Cliche,

If you're even remotely familiar with endtime novels, there is nothing at all that will surprise you here or make you think about religion in new way. I agree with the readers who recomend We All Fall Down instead. Mr. Caldwell does a much better job then Kleier with the subject matter

Thought provoking, irreverant, and some of the best quotes i've ever read. What if the second coming of Christ was met with scepticism....Is this the second coming or not...the book lets you decide, and never really commits one way or the other....I usually hate that, but this time I loved it. Do your self a favor and experience this gem of a book.

Cardboard Characters and Ridiculous Plot,
By Hope for the Best "Hope for the Best" (California USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Last Day (Mass Market Paperback)
Besides the paper thin characters, silly plot, and comic book dialog, this thing is long and poorly written as well. Supposedly, a movie was planned, but someone had the sense to not sink studio money in this opus. One of the real bombs of the last century and a waste of time in this one. There are a lot of excellent books to devote reading time to, so skip this overblown vanity piece.

Dated, but still very relevant,
By Vaughn Roste (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Last Day (Mass Market Paperback)
Reading this book would have been more timely when it was published in 1997, as its setting at the turn of the milenium is crucial to the plot, but having just read this book in late 2003 I still found it a very relevant read. The concept of a virgin-birthed (cloned) female Christ is just scandalous enough to arouse interest - what she says is even more interesting! Followers of feminist theology (such as the concept of Christa) need to read this book for the fresh ideas and perspectives it offers within a suspensefull, well-written story... everyone else will want to read it simply because it is so cleverly constructed! The author works in the prophecies of Fatima, Gog and Magog, and Armaggedon for a theological thrill-ride that holds its own even compared to the bigger-selling authors Tim LeHay and Jerry Jenkins. The modern parables contained within are themselves germs of truth that challenge all of us, and the radical new philosophy espoused by this female Messiah - declared as Anti-Christ by the Roman Catholic Church in the novel - encapsulates the way many modern readers already think about institutional religion. Even if you read it only for the transcript of the conversation between the Messiah and the Pope and the President of the United States, it`s still - even in this century - well worth your time. This is a highly enjoyable read, and for those that love to be intellectually and even spiritually challenged with a great story, I highly recommend it.

A Truly Great Book,

This book is probably one of the most incredible stories I have ever read. The author challeges the Christians with a big time twist and for the Jews, a whole new approach to their way of life. This book is filled with fact and thought inspiring chapters.Because this book is so good, I feel that to reveal what it is about would not be fair to those who have not read it yet. This is a book for all religions and all ages to read. A MUST READ!!!!

New Age pseudo-religious blathering,
By "tractarian72" (Bremerton, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Last Day (Mass Market Paperback)
I must admit I was captivated by the storyline throughout most of the novel. I cannot say the same for the ideas proposed theirein however. The "messiah" is a thinly disguised postergirl for all of the NewAge-ism that many American sadly mistake for spirituality. The author is against organized religion and flagrantly anti-Catholic, and shows considerable ignorance toward Roman Catholicism, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Chasidic Judaism, and possibly a few other "hypocritical" religions that I might've forgotten to mention. Enjoy this book for the story, but if you want any real religious insight try Henri Nouwen or Thich Nhat Hanh.

A Fantastic and Provocative Thriller!,

This review is from: The Last Day (Mass Market Paperback)
This was a superb book that was much more than just an exciting, page-turning, thriller. It made you think about both your personal religious beliefs and about organized religion. I highly recommend this book.

Knocked me out!,

This is a great book! I had not idea what to expect, and to my delight, this was the most unusual story I've read in a long, long time. I can't even think of anything to compare it to, it's so different. Incredibly realistic, it reads like fact. The plot is complex and increasingly firghtening as it goes, the suspense builds with each chapter, and every time you think you've got an idea what's going to happen, it takes you in an amazing new direction! I heartily endorse it, you will not be disappointed. This should be on every thinking person's reading list! THE BEST!

Great, It's Not,
By John Thornborrow (Oakland, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Last Day (Mass Market Paperback)
I found little of lasting value in this book, and I'll usually find something, even in brainless thrillers. But this one has only a hollow shell of a plot, with unreal characters and odd reactions to what should be a magnificent, transcending event. The key to all this would be a believeable female messiah, but in Jeza we are given a savior who lacks charisma, wisdom, and good sense. I could hardly imagine her attracting a following of any kind, let alone characters who should really know better. She is a caricature of a feminist, not a messiah, just as the Church and pope are caricatures of the real thing. Satire perhaps? If so, it fails. Subtlety is not this writer's strength, nor is complexity. Sorry to say, nor is writing. The more words in a book does not equal meaningful thought. While I thought some parts were fun, it ultimately was dreary. To those who read a great deal, it is hard to imagine this fluff being on their favorites list. It barely merited the time to place this review. But taste differs and we are free to make individual judgments, thank Jeza!

Powerful and convincing,

After finishing the book, it's pretty obvious to me why some reviewers are trying so hard to talk people out of reading this author. It's kind of like how GM reacted to Ralph Nader's book "Unsafe at any Speed." Kleier is to orgzanized religion what Ralph Nader was to the Corvair. Kleier is a master engineer disassembling a flawed vehicle. His novel takes apart and exposes the problem components of contemporary religion. But what makes this such an extraordinary feat is how he does it--by creating a convincingly supernatural "divine messenger." This messiah--a shrewd young woman named "Jeza"--uses the very tools of organized religion (scripture, parables, biblical prophesy) to expose some of religion's most disturbing failings and inconsistencies. He ties all this into an endlessly fascinating, suspenseful and emotional piece of fiction. Contrary to some of what I've read here, this novel is truly intelligent and well written. It's a quick-reading page turner, meticulously researched with a harrowing, unpredictable plot. Some people would have you think otherwise. They'd also like to sell you a nice, used Corvair.
