Night Over Water
Ken Follet is a master storyteller and Night Over Water is a masterpiece of a story. The events take place at the outbreak of World War II and the story is told from the perspective of the multiple passengers on a special plane that flies from England to America. The chapters in the story rotate through the story's main characters (i.e. the passengers), each of whom is...

A pale, period melodrama
Ken Follett is one of those uneven writers who is just as likely to publish a great book as a mediocre one. Unfortunately, this is a mediocre one. Ken Follett is one of those uneven writers who is just as likely to publish a great book as a mediocre one. Unfortunately, this is a mediocre one. In fact, it reminded me a great deal of those early WWII 'B' movies that studios used to turn out every couple of weeks, where the characters and the plot were pretty predictable and the outcome mostly certain. This book has some points of interest, mostly historical detail. Follett obviously has some kind of keen interest in the big flying boats of the period, but he doesn't use that fascination to advance the story well. The characters are stereotypes and the action is melodrama. The reader doesn't come away from this book with much to remember fondly.

Night Over Water, Oct. 25 2009
Ken Follet is a master storyteller and Night Over Water is a masterpiece of a story. The events take place at the outbreak of World War II and the story is told from the perspective of the multiple passengers on a special plane that flies from England to America. The chapters in the story rotate through the story's main characters (i.e. the passengers), each of whom is coping with some type of personal or professional crisis in their lives. It all comes together though and the story continuously piques the reader's interest without the confusion or malaise that can happen when many characters are active in a story.
As always, Follet has researched the subject matter thoroughly and this provides the story with immense credibility and readability. Unlike many other novels within the `thriller' genre, there is never a moment where the reader feels as though they've been taken for a fool because the author has over-sensationalized an event. In this regard, Follet is a first rate story teller and Night Over Water is without doubt one of the jewels in his crown.

A great read, Janv. 20 2009
I really enjoyed reading this book, I had a hard time putting it down actually. The very end is a little cheesy but it still made me smile :) I've enjoyed other books by this author as well. I definitely recommend it but I know its not for everyone

cliche ridden, Fév 22 2008
This is another example of why I rarely read fiction. I have never seen a book with so many sterotypical characters and plot cliches. I really do not know how I finished it, but I paid for it and I figured I would pay the price again and plow my way thru this weak book. My bother in law who also rarely reads fiction was reading Pillars by the same author and raved about it. I am going to give it a try on his recommendation alone. Don't waste you dollars on this poorly written volume!

Lots of fun, Oct. 25 2006
Yes, it's a bit formulaic and cheesey. But it is still a fun, eminently-readable page turner. If you like Follett's other works, you will enjoy this one too. Fun premise -- think "The Hindenburg" meets "Murder on the Orient Express" and you get the idea. Not exactly a Booker Prize winner, but great reading for the cottage.

Highly Recommended!, Mars 28 2004
"Night Over Water" was a highly enjoyable read. Eventhough the book starts out slow and uneventful, Ken Follett does an exceptional job developing the characters. I rated this book a 4 (which should be 4 1/2) because for the first half of the book I found it hard to concentrate and stay entertained. Follett jumps from one character to another explaining their life history and how they have ended up on the plane. Once the plane takes off, the story really begins to soar. Much to my surprise, the author also incorporates a series of romantic adventures. This was the first Ken Follett book I've read and it will definitely not be the last!

Night Over Water, Mars 15 2004
Par Un client
Ken Follet takes you back to Pre-World-WarII in, Night Over Water. Through the eyes of different characters, Ken Follet shows you an imaginary flight on the Pan-American Clipper. The flight never happened due to the breakout of war in Europe but the flight depicts what the author thought would have happened on the final flight of the Pan-American Clipper from Europe to America. The story begins with several small stories, stories that all end up on the Clipper. It carried rich celebrities to royalty to businessmen. In the story, it carried movie stars, criminals, detectives, a journalist and an exiled landlord. Ken Follet takes you through the lives of different passengers all fighting different battles. The clipper was the most luxurious plane of the time. Only a few people in the world could afford to ride in it. There are no longer any of the clippers, they all were scrapped and the parts used for other planes. The clipper had different compartments, all had at least 2 used. The main compartment changed from a lobby to a dining compartment. The seating compartments changed to sleeping bunks. The only rooms that didnt change were the operating rooms and the bathrooms. During the course of the story, the characters all face many problems. There are disagreements in a family, betrayal in a family business, a summer affair and a scientist kicked out of his country because of his religion. There were a few things I really liked about the book. What I liked most was how the small stories came together during the book. There were also a few things I didnt like. One of the things I didnt like was how the stories switched too suddenly. It didnt give you time to learn more about the story you just read about. Once you start reading this book, its hard to put it down. The plot makes you want to learn more about the characters. The characters are all very interesting. They all have interesting stories that make you want to know more. To anyone that wants an interesting book to read, I would definitely recommend, Night Over Water, by Ken Follet.

Follett never ceases to amaze.., Déc 23 2003
Once again, Follett weaves an intricate tapestry using history as its background. He has an uncanny ability to use real settings in historical times as a backdrop for rich, entertaining characters. As with any follett book, the characters are what drives the story. This is a story of people who seemingly have nothing to do with each other. The reader will see, as the story progresses, that all the people in the book are tied together in ways they can't possibly imagine. Each character is beautifully written as are the various relationships that form throughout the book. And the ending! Talk about a page turner. I've read many of Follett's books and this one is definetly up there with A Dangerous Fortune. It might not be as majestic as Pillars of the Earth (my personal favorite Follett book and my favorite overall book that I've ever read to date), but it's just as entertaining.

My First Follet-Not My Last!, Jui 23 2003
This is the first time I have ever read a book by Ken Follet, after many suggestions from my husband and I really enjoyed it. Not my usual genre, I like non-fiction he reminds me a bit of Sidney Sheldon, but not so corny (sorry, Sidney). But I really enjoyed this book, a very quick, light, read.Try it, I bet you will enjoy it, you feel like you really know the characters and want to get to another chapter to find out more about them.
