Another outstanding tale from King,
By
This review is from: Laird Of The Wind (Paperback)
I loved Angel Knight, Raven's Moon and Heather Moon, so I was delighted when King continued her fine, deft hand with another Scottish Tale.Isobel of Aberlady was born with the "sight" and she has seen visions of a dark knight who comes to besiege her castle, both a rescuer and kidnapper! James Lindsay was a Scottish Noble, but has been outlawed, accused of betraying his leader. James is determined to win his good name back, and he sees Isobel as a weapon to get his justice. James intends on using Isobel to gain the freedom of his cousin. Only plans go awry and they must take to the forrest to escape their enemies. Ah, I wonder if a wee bit of James Douglas is not the basis for this James, for all the dashing and legend of the Black Douglas rests easily on the mantle of King's character. King is unsurpassed in her skill to weave a true Scottish tale.

Wonderful storytelling, touching characters,

As a huge fan of Scottish history, I was so happy to discover Susan King late last year. This is the second of her novels I have read and I think it's a wonderful combination of Scottish history, a complicated relationship, and a bit of the paranormal with Isabel's visions. Both Isabel and Jamie are complex characters and there is an interesting development in their relationship -- from captor and captive to friends to lovers. Even though at one point he takes the role of her captor, Jamie never treats Isabel badly or loses respect for her. And in an odd way he sets her free. I always learn something new with King's novels and the descriptions of falconry here are fascinating. Love scenes don't come until very late in the book and they are sensual and lovely. This is a thinking person's romance...I recommend it and all of her other books.

A fabulous book!,

This review is from: Laird Of The Wind (Paperback)
A friend recommended Susan King's books to me, and now I'm reading everything she has written so far! LAIRD OF THE WIND is one of the best romances that I have read in ages, and a great Scottish romance. Susan King writes beautiful prose that pulls you into the story, and her history is always accurate. The characters are wonderful in this one. Jamie Lindsay is a warm, wise hero, with dark secrets that haunt him. He is always good to the heroine, and even when the tension is high between them and he loses patience with her, or thinks she has betrayed him, he is never unkind or selfish, and always strong. The goshawk is great in this, very different! The way its training is woven into the story is fascinating. The goshawk helps to bring the hero and heroine together, and it is all very believable. I loved the movie "Braveheart", and this is a MUST READ for anyone who loved that movie. Susan King takes the story of Wallace just a little farther just when you thought it was over. This is an amazing and wonderful book and my favorite of this author's books so far!(I am going to read her newest soon.) If you want an in-depth and satisfying story with accurate history and deep emotions and wonderful characters, you will love this book.

I bought this book while browsing and reading the customers reveiws. I love Scottish tales and discovering Susan King was a treasure! I have since read 3 more of her novels- just finishing The Angel Knight- and I loved it as much as Laird of the Wind. You pay a little more attention to Susan Kings work, if you like accurate history it is wonderful. This story is so vivid, in your mind's eye you can picture the settings. I can't say enough good about this book. About all of her books! Like one reviewer said, you can't wait to get to the ending, but wish it never would!

history minus the romance,

This review is from: Laird Of The Wind (Paperback)
I've ordered many books from Amazon but have never taken the time to review one before now. I like Scottish history and the story concept sounded interesting, so I had high hopes for this book when I ordered it. It is obvious that Ms. King put a great deal of research into this book and the historical content is excellent. However, the 2nd word in the historical romance genre is "romance" which was, unfortunately, seriously lacking in this story. In many places throughout the book the dialogue seems to be specifically designed to impart some historical fact or another to the reader, rather than flowing as a natural conversation between characters. In short, this story reads more like an history lesson than it does a romance and I can now say I know more than I ever cared to about goshawks.

I have recently discovered this author, and I love all the ones I've read so far, and I'm searching for the others. Her books are always sensitive, intelligent and emotional. No shallow stuff, silly stuff, etc. that you find a lot in romances. Her characters and her stories always seem so real, and I like that. LAIRD OF THE WIND is so powerful, and it made me cry. It's one of my favorites. Ms. King is really talented!!

A disappointment,

This review is from: Laird Of The Wind (Paperback)
Laird of the Wind had all the elements of a wonderful romance but it was a disappointment. The dialog between the two main characters was at times so unbelievable that I found myself snickering! Too much of the book is dedicated to a falcon and it's training, then it drops off. One would think that the falcon must have some important part in the story for the author to go on and on about it but it didn't. James is being hunted by both the English and the Scots, kidnaps Isobel, and is trying to save his cousin Margaret. But, he finds the time to tame a wild falcon which includes sleepless nights and patience. Come on! This is the first review I have ever written. I'm not happy that it is a negative one but I read all the reviews before I purchase a book (which were positive) only to be disappointed after reading the book so I thought another opinion should be included.

Susan King writes about good people faced with difficult choices--my favorite kind! I loved following the adventures of James and his Isobel, with their feathered guardian angel above and beside them! A treasure from a gifted storyteller!

Heather Moon: Another Susan King masterpiece!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Laird Of The Wind (Paperback)
Once again Susan King has written a captivating love story steeped in a sweeping era of Scottish history. As always, she has given her readers a wonderfully written novel with a beautiful storyline and absolutely engrossing characterization. Susan's medieval history background brings her stories to life in such a natural flow, that one never finds the history overshadowing the storytelling. Only those of a less erudite bent could dislike a Susan King novel.
