3.0 out of 5 stars Great plot, but the only character I got attached to was Baz
Certainly a very entertaining story, with a dynamic plot and a sense of humor to boot. I found it difficult to get attached to any of the characters, however; If one died, I wouldn't have cared very much. I don't think I've ever seen so many typos in one fanntasy book in my life, either. But Bazil himself and the pitiable Doom are enough to make Bazil Broketail a...

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Christopher Rowleys bests!, Sep 6 2002
This review is from: Bazil Broketail (Paperback)
Bazil Broketail is one of the most addictive, exciting and fun to read books I have ever read. It includes amazing fight scenes, exciting plot twists and simply phenominal charachter developement. You follow the lady Lagdalen and orphan boy Relkin through marching legions, intense clashes with imps and trolls, powerfull sorcery, and much more, not to mention the Dragons with their gargantuan strength. A masterful beginning to the wonderful set of books. If you enjoy any of the above, even a little you will be rapt with attention the whole way through. But don't take my word for it, read Bazil Broketail yourself and experiences its greatness first hand.

This book pulls you in, and keeps pulling. The Story has a way of making you to read more. Bazil and his Dragonboy Relkin are my fav characters in the book, I for one like this book because the story is so nicely writen. Christopher has outdone himself, He has brought people to read his books, He is the greatest writer of all time, besides Issac Asimov.

5.0 out of 5 stars Broketail series, Jan 22 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Bazil Broketail (Paperback)
The whole Broketail series is INCREDIBLE, I can never seen to put then down. I always end up arguing with myself as to how many chapters I get to read before I go to sleep, and I always end up reading more. I simply devour these books. Christopher Rowley wove a wolderful world here where magic is an underlying power and dragons talk and fight battles along side there dragonboys. And created very special characters in all the books, led by (of course) Relkin and Bazil.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dragons of Detail, Jan 6 2001

This review is from: Bazil Broketail (Paperback)
What can I say? The Bazil Broketail series is one of the best fantasy series I've ever read (the other ones being Dragonlance, Discword, Prydain, The Dark is Rising, Krondor, His Dark Materials, and the Earthsea quartet). It is based on a world of powerful necromancers, witches, wizards, elves, dwarves, Battledradons, and men. It goes into amazing detail no matter what page you read. It explains the political system of the relam, the organization of the armies of Argonath are so detailed that I bet you'll never find anything that goes so indepth. What really got me, however, is the fighting between individual characters is so detailed that it feels like you actually there watching the fight happenning! For any fantasy genre reader, this is a must have! Even if you don't like fantasy you will enjoy it? Even military and action readers admit this book deserves at least 4 stars! I've read the series 3 times! It never gets old!

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong with a wyvern!, July 18 2000
By
Draco girl (Columbus, IN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bazil Broketail (Paperback)
I first heard of this book series from a friend who picked up the last in the series and was reading it at school. When my family and I went to London, I found it in a bookstore and picked up the first one in Rowley's Battledragon series- Bazil Broketail. This book is awesome. I read it whenever I had some time- Usually on the London Underground (Mind the gap). It tells the story of a young 14-year old orphanboy named Relkin and his wyvern/battledragon, Bazil, who live in a world called Ryeleth, a world of giant dragons, wizards, witches, and numerous other creatures. Relkin and Bazil journey from their home to join the Leigons Army, and Bazil has to compete with other wyverns for the privelege. During one battle, Bazil's tail end is chopped off. Because I won't spoil this for you, I'll just say that his tail end is replaced, but it is bent at an odd angle, making it look broken. Hence, Bazil gets th name Broketail. Around the time Bazil joins the Leigons, the Princess of Marneri is kidnapped, and it is up to a powerful witch, Lessis, the Queen of Birds, to get her back. With her assistant Lagdalen, she enlists the help of the dragon brigade the 109th, Bazil and Relkin's. They end up fighting for their lives in the stronghold of the Doom, a great rock full of powerful magic and a strong brain. Their numbers are reduced to three dragons, one stuck behind them and the other two, Bazil being one of them, fighting a great troll named Puxdool. Now, it is up to Relkin, Lagdalen, Lessis, and Bazil to destroy the Doom and save Princess Besetia, the hope of Marneri. Bazil as well as the other characters are wonderful characters that are intelligent, and the wyverns are creatures one can easily understand, thanks to Christopher Rowley. A word of caution, though- it is a good idea to get an idea of how big wyverns are early on- otherwise it gets a little confusing. This adventure is one no one should miss! Stop reading this review and click on the shopping cart button! If you don't own this book, I strongly recommend you get it right away and start reading (and, while you're at it, buy the other books in the series)

5.0 out of 5 stars Bazil is Beautiful!, April 13 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Bazil Broketail (Paperback)
Want to escape to another world so thoroughly that time just slips away? Come with Bazil and his friends as they defend their world against all kinds of evils.

Great characterizations, a unique SF imaginative vision, superb action writing style, and a touch of terran Napoleonic War history brought to another galaxy make the entire series a wonderful read. Not since Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe novels have I had such a great time going to war!

It was Bazil who came to my rescue through a recent long illness. Many thanks, Christopher Rowley!

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite book ever, Mar 22 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Bazil Broketail (Paperback)
This book was awsome. I recomend this book over the Hobbit, Narnia and Redwall series. The battles were so realistic that you would think that you are actually there. But the only problem with the book is how can 15 men, 6 dragonboys, two witches and 2 dragons defend themselves against a whole army.

2.0 out of 5 stars A totally one-sided book!, Mar 12 2000
By
G. Long (United States of America) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Bazil Broketail (Paperback)
The story looked promising, the characters looked good...but the Bazil Broketail series failed to keep me interested for long. The stories are rediculously one-sided; evil never wins. A good story has evil "winning the battle, but losing the war." From the three books I have read, evil doesn't even win a battle! BORING! Plus, the story introduces characters and either kills them off a page later, or totally forgets about them! If the character isn't important, either leave him out entirely, or don't fully describe his name, age or job, otherwise the book gets confusing, as you woun't be able to tell who truly IS important. The politics of the book are confusing as well. Never have I seen so many legions and empires described in a series. I skipped over many sections of the book because they were so dull and/or confusing. Here's one more gripe: the lead characters are invincible. Incidents occur (mostly to the benefit of the main characters) that are totally unrealistic. In one novel, after killing a monster, Relkin (one of the main characters) reloads, aims, and fires a crossbow at another monster before it even had time to lift its arm to throw its spear. It take at LEAST 2.5 seconds to load a crossbow, which is more than enough time for the monster to throw it's spear! I gave the book 2 stars because the character development was okay, but other than that, I only recommend this book for the "read before bedtime" crowd, or insomniacs that need to sleep.
