GREAT!,
By "mookiekaos" (Philly, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beast Within (Paperback)
The beast within was just a really great book. Jane Jensen doesn't get wrapped up with sexual tension, even though there is an attraction between Gabriel and his secretary. It's action packed, and just very interesting. Keeps you on the edge of your seat and wanting more. I can't wait until another one comes out. There better be another one. If you like Anne Rice, her she is, without all the adjetives, descriptions, and long agonizing histories that take up half of the book. It's action and horror- pure and simple.

The horror continues and Gabriel is great as usual!,

Gabriel Knight, an owner of rare books store in New Orleans and, as revealed in "Sins of the Fathers", a descendant of ancient bloodline of mysterious shadow hunters - Schattenjagers, decided to stay in Rittersberg, Germany, after his uncle Wolfgang Ritter died and bequeathed him the Schloss Ritter castle. Since he became a new Schattenjager, he was asked for help by villagers to solve a fearsome murder. A little daughter of a villager has been killed by something what seems to be a werewolf! Gabriel agrees to look for a werewolf and kill it. After exploring the crime scene and finding several interesting details, the trace leads to a prominent hunting club with kind of very curious members and moreover, the werewolf case seems to be very similar to an old werewolf curse of ancient German history ...The book is as great as its prequel. Jane Jensen proved again that she is a master of horror fictions based on real history. And if you do not like adventure games, maybe you will change your mind after trying the video game version of this book [actually, the book is based on the video game]. I hope that "Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the sacred, blood of the damned" will be also novelized by Jane Jensen because nobody else is able to narrate Gabriel Knight mysteries better.

Good Book, More Real Character Depth,
By H. Pham "Kung Fu Hugs!" (Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beast Within (Paperback)
I loved this book. It provides a clear insight into the characters; they seem more real. She departs from the monotony of following the game script and delves into the real plot and how it affects the character. Gabriel and Grace are real people with real problems and character flaws. The main female character is strong and intelligent, a rarity in the literary world, and contributes to a large portion of solving the mystery despite the fact she is not the "titled character".I hope to read more adventures of Grace and Gabriel without the need of a game. I find myself drawn to their plight and would like to see a novelization of the third game, and further novels of their adventures with each other and the occult.

Better than the first novelization,
This review is from: Beast Within (Paperback)
I was a bit hesitant to purchase The Beast Within novelization after reading Sins of the Fathers novel by the same author (based on the first Gabriel Knight computer game), but eventually decided to get it due to the storyline which includes subjects that interest me -- Wagner and lycantrophy, for instance. Fortunately, The Beast Within works much better in the non-interactive form than the first in the series and makes a suspenseful reading, admirably mixing real-life facts and characters with pure fiction. The book also explains things that were skipped in the game (or that at least didn't catch my eyes or ears). Highly recommended for the fans of the game series.

Good ideas, poorly written,
This review is from: Beast Within (Paperback)
I bought this book after completeing the third gabriel knight video game. I loved it. I thought The Beast Within would be a perfect choice for a read, because i liked the characters from the third game, and the werewolf angle intrigued me. However, after a promising prologue, I was let down by chapters and chapters of boring conversations and pointless explanations. Also, the writing itself is poor. Often, in one sentence, the entire setting and character view can change, confusing the reader, making him re-read the page to find out what is going on. If not for an unexpected plot twist, and rather gripping climax, I would have rated this book much lower- despite that I am a fan of the game series.

I read this book after beating the game, and I was still kept on the edge of my seat. It has many details not included in the game. Even the parts that ARE in the game are changed a bit so it isn't just a detailed walkthrough as the original novel was (although I still enjoyed that one as well!) There were a number of typos, missed periods and whatnot, but that was an error on the editor's part. I definitely reccomend the book to anyone who likes this kind of fiction.

An Amazing Sequel,
By James "James" (Melbourne, VIC Australia) - See all my reviews

GK2 is an excellent companion to the GK2 game. Ms. Jenson gives you an unexpected mixture of fact and fiction that keeps the story alive and real.I also found by reading this book that the part of Ludwig II becomes clearer than what is was in the game (to me anyway). I certainly look forward to the 3rd book in the series!

I thought this book was excellent. Even though I played the game the book was far more detailed in explaining the background of the story. I am in the process of ordering Millenium Rising. Mrs. Jensen is truely a gifted artist.
