5.0 out of 5 stars Todd Wilbur is KING!
I made my own Twinkies and Reese's cups!! They were pretty darn close, that's good enough for me because everything was delicious!! (My hips aren't crazy about the book.) It's fun to impress people as well as make their mouths water when you tell them what you have accomplished. If you like to have fun in the kitchen, this book will not disappoint you. Then again, I do...

3.0 out of 5 stars Too much hassle for a Twinkie Clone
Some of the recipes in this book are easy to make and delicious--Mrs. Field's Cookies, Orange Julius, Dairy Queen Blizzard, Twix Bars, to name a few. But I balked when reading the "how-to's" of Homemade Twinkies. Who has time to roll tin foil around spice jars to use as a mold for the cake batter? Then the boring task of poking holes into each individual...

But I balked when reading the "how-to's" of Homemade Twinkies. Who has time to roll tin foil around spice jars to use as a mold for the cake batter? Then the boring task of poking holes into each individual "Twinkie" and filling them up with whipped cream. I can't imagine wanting more than a couple Twinkies a year, anyway, and this recipe makes a whole bunch. However, this IS a fun book, and I imagine parents would have a great time whipping these treats up with their kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Top Secret Recipes" are my favorite cookbooks!, Oct 29 2001
This review is from: Top Secret Recipes: Creating Kitchen Clones of America's Favorite Brand-Name Foods (Paperback)
I have all of the Top secret cookbooks. These are the recipes I would highly recommend: Tony Roma's ribs,(on this one it is more the technique than the recipe, I took the time to cook the Barbeque sauce but it wasn't worth the effort, so bottled is fine) Red Lobster Broiled lobster( My husband can cook it better than the restaurant!!), Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuits, Shoney's Low-Fat Chicken Fried Steak with white gravy, (this one is a family favorite!).The Olive Garden salad and Fettucine Alfredo are also great. I love to try new recipes and collect cookbooks, these are some of my favorite books.

Do you want your family to help in the kitchen? Ever have something in a resturant and say to yourself that it would be better only if....? The entire series of books is a must have in any kitchen. They are easy to follow and flavorful. My husband and 2 teen boys now love to cook.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty darn good book, July 7 2001

This review is from: Top Secret Recipes: Creating Kitchen Clones of America's Favorite Brand-Name Foods (Paperback)
Good Book has alot of good recipes just a variety not concentrating on any one specific restraunt or food type. At some times has vague recipes requiring fairly expensive premade supplies (premade breadstick doe for little ceaser crazy bread doh!!!) .

This book takes recipes from all over the country - Drinks like Snapple Ice Tea, candy bars, McDonald's sandwiches, KFC, and so many others (for a list, are spelled out easily and simply.

Imagine eating a Quarter Pounder in just 10 minutes for pennies! Make your favorite foods for cheaper and have more fun doing it! I have all the books in Mr. Wilbur's series and they are fantastic!

3.0 out of 5 stars How One Man *Thinks* Fast Food *Tastes*, Feb 13 2001
By
This review is from: Top Secret Recipes: Creating Kitchen Clones of America's Favorite Brand-Name Foods (Paperback)
The title of this book piqued my interest. I had the impression that Wilbur (the author) spent his hours masquerading himself as a mild-mannered hamburger griller, sneaking into popular eateries, and stealing away with the official formulas -- all for the dining pleasure of his readers. I was wrong.

This book is a collection of Wilbur's *interpretation* of secret recipes. The premise is that Wilbur, inspired by the Neiman Marcus/Mrs. Fields $250 cookie recipe urban myth, set out to re-create his favorite restaurant and fast food favorites. That's quite an undertaking to say the least.

I guess my big problem is this: I wound up buying a cookbook of how one man *thinks* fast food *tastes.*

What redeems the book is that his recipes are pretty good -- and surprisingly accurate.

Here are a few notes: 1.) There is a lot of regional fast food cuisine in here. (I'm from New Jersey and I didn't recognize many of the fast food places.)

2.) Almost all of the recpies are accompanied by a hand-drawn picture (by Wilbur) of the correct food assembly. Although the drawings were quite primitive, they did the job. My food really *looked* correct -- all I needed was a paper napkin and plastic fork to go with it.

3.) I suppose this goes without saying but -- This is not a book for either the truly health conscious or anyone on a special (e.g. vegetarian, vegan, kosher) diet.

4.) Families may enjoy this book as moms/dads can handle the preparation and kids can deal with the assembly.

Bon appetit!

I love cookbooks so when this came out on the market, I thought "Sure, I'll bite," but I didn't except any of the recipes to taste like the real thing. That was before I made the Chick-Fil-a and the Wendy's Frosty. These 2 recipes were really great and became favorites in my household. The next couple of recipes I tried, LJS Battered Fish and KFC Original weren't as dead on as the other two were, but they were tasty dishes nonetheless. I haven't tried every recipe in the book so I can't say what the ratio is to real versus Top Secret, but I did enjoy this book enough to buy the rest of the set.
