4.0 out of 5 stars Great read for anyone looking to buy down south
This book is a great read for anyone looking to purchase property down south. It really helps you take the emotion out of the purchase. It has you step back and create a plan, instead of just jumping in.

This book could (and should) be no more than 30 pages long. Most, if not all, of the useful information was pulled off websites or other books. The rest is detailed info about conversations the character Ted had on his trips to the states - and convincing his wife to come. Ted talks about the line up at the airport, the drive in a taxi (and everything it passed), and going to watch a basketball game in Phoenix. He also goes on and on about his daughter and what she want's to do while in the states, which would be great if this wasn't a book about buying property. If you know NOTHING about real-estate (like the character Ted) and prefer long drawn-out stories -> this is YOUR book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't like the story-telling, Feb. 23 2011
This review is from: South of 49: The Canadian Guide to Buying Residential Real Estate in the United States (Hardcover)
I would have preferred more facts, and less storytelling. I was really disappointed in this book, and would not recommend it to anyone looking into buying real estate in the States. There has to better books with more concise information than this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have Guide To Buying Real Estate in the U.S - Very user friendly, Jan. 13 2010

It would have to take an Irish guy to fill what seems like a very obvious gap in the market - advice to Canadians on buying residential real estate in the U.S. The book is very easy to read as it's done in a story format, with very useful and relevant information interspersed throughout. The author has wisely tapped into the knowledge of experienced investors to pass on their wisdom. With the US dollar weakening in relation to the Loonie, many Canadians are looking at the U.S real estate market as a great investment opportunity - but there are many mistakes that can be made, as this books points out. More importantly, it shows insightful ways to avoid making these mistakes. Great resource for beginner and experienced investors.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, June 10 2011

Little, if any, specific information about what to what out for, etc. To me, the things investors want to know are how should I own the property, how does the way I own affect my taxes and tax filing requirements, what do I need to know about US estate tax, and US withholding taxes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thinking of Buying in the US? READ THIS BOOK!, March 9 2010

Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: South of 49: The Canadian Guide to Buying Residential Real Estate in the United States (Hardcover)
This book wastes no time in cutting right to the heart of the issue many Canadians have when it comes to buying property South of the border and that is they do it on a whim. It's an emotional purchase. Driven by the feeling that property is "on sale" or the emotional feeling they get on vacation in Florida or some other emotional reaction that isn't based on a plan or solid, rational thinking. And the reality is that buying in the US is a lot more complicated than it looks. And if you buy site unseen or hire any old real estate broker then you could be buying yourself a big problem.

But the book doesn't illustrate this with facts or figures. It does it with the story of a guy who nearly buys a house that has more or less been destroyed through the foreclosure process. And then it takes you through his story as he regroups and learns everything he needs to know to make a good quality and well informed decision for his US purchase.

Taking you through his journey you really learn without feeling like you're working hard to get the important facts.

There is a lot more involved in buying in the US than I realized and I am very grateful I read this book before even taking a trip to look at potential property.

If you are considering buying in the US then you'll enjoy and appreciate this book!! It's a great read!! I think it's VERY important to note, however, that this book is NOT a HOW TO BOOK.

After you're done reading this story (because it's a fictional story of a character considering buying in the US) you won't have the HOW TO details. It will, however, give you some really good questions to ask yourself and provide you with some important direction in terms of figuring out what your goal for buying US property is and where you should be looking in terms of markets that will be a good fit for you!

PLUS - all the proceeds from the sale of this book are being donated to a great cause as well!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Nothing New, Dec 27 2011

This review is from: South of 49: The Canadian Guide to Buying Residential Real Estate in the United States (Hardcover)
As noted by another reviewer, no real new content here. Spending 20 minutes with Google will get you more. The simplistic story line doesn't help in learning about the subject. Was expecting to get some useful, new info, not the same old basic info that is repeated many times on the Net.

1.0 out of 5 stars not very helpful, Dec 23 2011
This review is from: South of 49: The Canadian Guide to Buying Residential Real Estate in the United States (Hardcover)
If someone is looking to buy in the US I don't think this book will provide much if any useful info. Its a story of a couple and their quest to buy a property. If you are an investor and want answers on tax, estate, and liability issues it will be a frustrating read.

This book is very general. Not much on specifics. A lot better book is Canadian Snowbird Guide:Living Partime in the USA and Mexico
