5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of food for thoughts here
Like any book of the Dummies series, this book provides a lot of information, and establishes a strong foundation in an incredibly complex and confusing field. I am a big fan of the Dummies series. 3.0 out of 5 stars Good book on Nutrition
Did the author really needed a whole chapter on alchohol? I thought some of the infomation in this book was talked about a little too much like about how our food is digested or what to do when eating out at a resturant or at a fast food joint. What I liked about the book was it was very laid out and easy to read. Some of the infomation the book mentions are the basics...

(REAL NAME)
Like any book of the Dummies series, this book provides a lot of information, and establishes a strong foundation in an incredibly complex and confusing field. I am a big fan of the Dummies series. Thanks to them, I learned a varied set of skills including EXCEL software, Chess, and cooking. But, nutrition is far more confusing than a user friendly software program.

This book gives you all the basics you need to know about nutrition. This includes a good description of the macro nutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fats). The author even describes their respective chemical molecular compositions. Coverage of micro nutrients (vitamins, minerals) is just as good. This book gives you the information so you will eat healthily, understand what you eat, and what are your eating requirements. It is just like an excellent textbook for a college level course on nutrition. Except, as all Dummies book, it is a lot funnier and user friendly to read and extract the information than a college textbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nutrition for Dummies, Sep 30 2001

This is an excellent source of information organized in an easy-to-read format. It covers an entire range of topics from basic facts to healthy eating and food preparation. Much of the data is arranged in chart and table formats, which make it a great reference guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Ms. Rinzler!, Jun 27 2001
By A Customer
I got this book as a wedding shower present less than 4 years ago and my copy is already bent back at the spine and dog-eared to beat the band. What this book is is a wonderful, sometimes funny and always informative guide to basic nutrition. Ms. Rinzler explains very complex ideas simply and competently in 'real people' language without pouring 'sugar' on them to make them more palatable - she explains things how they really are, which helps enormously in demystifying natural biological processes and how our body uses and then discards everything we put into it. Two years ago, I (5'6" female) made the scales groan at 171.6 american pounds. Thanks in part to this book, I now weigh a much healthier 129.8 pounds.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a handle on their own nutrition and who want to be in charge of what goes on their plate and into their mouth!

3.0 out of 5 stars It was not what I expected !, April 30 2000
I was hoping the book will go through most of the myths and or facts around nutrition surrounding us. I believe this is badly needed, I hear so many people with these crazy ideas about eating and drinking juices not good, or it is better to drink water instead of juices and so on.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for vegetarians/vegans, April 2 2000
By A Customer
It isn't often that I write a negative review, but considering the widespread appeal of these "for Dummies" guides, I thought I'd better catch a few of you out there while I still had time. I will admit there is a lot of very good and interesting information in this manual, but the information about vegetarians and vegans is not only outdated, some of it is downright wrong-especially where the author discusses vegan nutrition. Considering this, it makes one wonder how well she did her homework in other areas of the book. In other words, if you wanted to give your detractors more ammo, here it is. Vegetarians, don't waste your money. There are lots of other better nutrition manuals out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brain author laudes excellent write, well documented., Dec 29 1999

KFG (NJ United States) - See all my reviews
Many of the diet books and even the how-to books on health are lousy. Some of the dummies books are great, most are good, and some are just OK. This one is superb. Gives the lay person a view of nutrition that is lacking in our public education system and which is sorely needed. Nutrition is so important. Your diet is probably the single area of life which you can influence you future health and well being second only to quitting smoking and attitude. I recommend this book whole heartedly and with my "whole brain"...best, Kenneth Giuffre MD, author "The Care and Feeding of Your Brain", career press 1999.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for those who wish to create their own diets, Mar 23 2002
By A Customer
This book title may be misleading, as it is not for dummies, it is for those who know little about nutrition but wish to know more It is highly informative, covering all aspects of nutrition, including vitamins, minerals, etc. that are stored in the body as well as those are not. Examples are given for foods that promote good health with plenty of references and studies that back up these claims. The digestive system is explained to give a very good and necessary knowledge of how foods are metabolized in the body. Scientific names are given, always with the layman's term or at least a thorough explanation. Plenty of websites are given for further reference. I highly recommend this book for those who wish to further their knowledge of nutrition. An excellent companion book, which is almost completely a very thorough list of food values and little else is 'Bowes And Church's Food Values of Portionz Commonly Used'.

2.0 out of 5 stars not what i wanted, Sep 27 2002
By
I was hoping for a book that would help me put together menus with the best nutrition information. this one just didn't do that for me. instead it had the same old tired and conflicting information as the other books or magazines. plus, this one spent way too much time on the digestive process. most of us already know that or just don't care.

2.0 out of 5 stars not what i wanted, Sep 27 2002

I checked out this book as much as i could on-line before buying and it sounded like a great way to figure out what i was doing wrong with my dieting and nutrition. all it did was point out the same old tired information that appears in all the other books and waste several pages explaining how the digestive system works. i was hoping for a book that would use the ideas of good nutrition to put together menus but this one didn't come through. i wish i hadn't bought it.
