A Book Can Change Your Life, Feb 7 2008
This review is from: The Splendid Art of Decorating Eggs (Paperback)
I first came across this book when my Mom brought it home from the library many, many years ago and I was absolutely fascinated by the decorated egg designs. I didn't have access to the gold plated egg stands listed in the book but I did follow the directions and made a few simple eggs. Years later I remembered this book and took it out of the library again. This time I read it thoroughly and after finding supplies, started making decorated eggs. This book launched me into the whole hobby/business of "Egguery" when I was a teenager. I sold my eggs for many, many years. People always wanted to know how I learned this craft and I would say "from a book I got at the library". My eggs are in many countries around the world and I've been to some really neat places and met some really cool people, all because of this book.
But the most important thing I learned from this whole experience was tenacity. I learned how not to give up when trying to do a really difficult thing.
It's my opinion that this book can be life changing. I finally bought my own copy and I display it proudly on my bookshelf.
The author clearly describes in great detail how to take an egg, empty it, dry it, and carve it. She often paints the outside of the egg or sometimes leaves the shell natural. She also puts various trims and decorations on the outside. Most of the eggs are cut with little hinged doors so they open and close. Most hold little scenes and others have velvet linings--jewellery boxes. There are many colour photos, drawings and even photos of Carl Faberge's eggs. Egg decorating has changed somewhat over the years, but the basics laid out in this book have not changed.
Thank you Rosemary Disney for sharing your knowledge in how to create amazing decorated eggs.
