3.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful plot, spunky heroine, flat hero!!!!!!
I would give this book 3-1/2 stars, because I really, really wanted to like it. I'm always sad when I find a book I could like, but just can't because some element is lacking, and this book did start out good. I liked Serena, she was spunky, funny, loveable, and you could feel her sadness come right off the page. Ms. Cach did an excellent job developing her character.The...

Alex Woding was an astronomer and wanted solitude to map and research falling stars. He had met the ghost years ago as a lad. He chose Maiden Castle for his heavenly research, as well as, for his own personal reasons. But the ghost of Serena kept scaring his male staff away. Only the females were not prey to any of her pranks or tricks.

***** A romantic, but wily, ghost story that will beg readers to read it more than once! This one may be the KEEPER OF THE YEAR, Readers! I highly recommend this one!

I would give this book 3-1/2 stars, because I really, really wanted to like it. I'm always sad when I find a book I could like, but just can't because some element is lacking, and this book did start out good. I liked Serena, she was spunky, funny, loveable, and you could feel her sadness come right off the page. Ms. Cach did an excellent job developing her character. The scenes when she's trying to scare everyone out of the castle are hilarious, and I got a good chuckle from the bathtub scene. The story was believable, and interesting and other then Serena, it's what kept me plodding along for the nineteen chapters I read.

My problem was with Alex. Ms. Cach didn't seem to take the same amount of time to develope him, and I found him warm, but all around a very flat hero. Also, the book took so long in having the two communicate, and for any real spark to be lit, that when they did get together it was less than full-filling to read. I held with it for 19 chapters, then couldn't take it and skimmed and skipped ahead and of course they live happily ever after, the end.

Oh, on a side note: the villan le Gayne is very evil, and the parts of the story he's in are very well written and gothic-ley chilling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended Ghost Story, July 26 2001
This review is from: Of Midnight Born (Mass Market Paperback)
What a wonderful treat! I am always looking for authors who are creative and willing to take risks in romance. Lisa Cach is now on my list of authors to buy and keep. Our heroine, Serena, is not your same-ole, same-ole heroine. She is a strong-willed woman, who by the way, has suffered in life, and now intends to make trouble for others, especially men who seek a home in the Maiden Castle. Laughing. This novel is fun. It will make you laugh but will also tug at your heart and maybe bring a tear or two to your eyes. It's one of the best ghost stories that I have read in romance. Ms. Cach has good skills too. She can actually plot!!!!!!!!! And her prose is simple and clear. This is a terribly romantic book, with some of the best dialogue around. Don't miss it. I loved it, and it's a keeper on my romance shelf!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, Jan 30 2001

A woman in England during the 1350s didn't have a lot of options to ensure her longevity. Serena Clerebold had to find a husband. The Plague had killed most of her family as well as decimating the population surrounding her family's keep. With winter coming, no one to help harvest food, and inadequate knowledge of farming, Serena was desperate. Unfortunately, her plan to marry ended in her own death, leaving her a ghost at what become known as Maiden Castle.

Serena had worked hard to chase away the previous occupants, and was equally determined to rid herself of Alex Woding as well. After five hundred years, she believed she had earned the castle with her blood and determination. She hated living people. Especially this man who makes her long for flesh again, and the opportunity to experience the passion always denied her. Soon she will discovery how much she underestimates Alex.

Alex rented Maiden Castle for the view. An astronomer, it was the perfect place for him to study the night sky. He staffs the castle with only men, having had enough of female influence with his sisters and deceased wife. Little does he realize how profoundly his life will be changed by another female -- one not even living.

OF MIDNIGHT BORN proves itself both delightful and whimsical. Lisa Cach manages to bring the impossible to life making suspension of disbelief very easy for the reader. Indeed, Cach succeeds in bringing remarkable emotional depth to these characters, thereby creating a tale of love that will capture the reader's heart. Original and memorable, I highly recommend OF MIDNIGHT BORN.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lively, entertaining story, Jan 15 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Of Midnight Born (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the first paranormal romance I've read and I will definitely be reading more of them. Lately, I've tired of reading romances that were constant "drawing room" scenes between the hero and heroine with the same old banter and not any suspense to speak of. This story kept me turning pages, especially to find out how Serena was killed and how she was connected to the cherry tree. Plus, she was such a fun, interesting character and Alex was different, too. For a change, he wasn't a Duke or a Rancher! I liked the humor in the book and the wonderful secondary characters, especially Beth and Rhys. I do recommend this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars I never read a ghost story from this point of view, Dec 3 2000

Unusual. You actually get to tail along with Serena, the ghost, as she tries wholeheartedly to get rid of everyone in her castle. It's men she despises, and her attempts of scaring them away are quite humorous. Alex, who fell in love with the castle as a child, isn't budging. He's already had a run in with Serena many years ago when he was a boy. Now he's returned as a man and wants some peace and quite to study the stars. Serena's decided to give Alex anything but. Lisa Cach is a talented young writer and I couldn't wait to see how she planned on ending this book. I wasn't to crazy about the ending( yes! it was happy! aren't they all?)but I really can't see the book ending any other way.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Paranormal, Oct 21 2000

I have only read a handful of romances involving ghosts and have mostly found them lacking in any sort of believablity. Lisa Cach has written a story you can actually buy into. The characters exhibit emotions and actions based in reality I thought, now the ending...well this is fiction. Serena evolves nicely as a character and I felt you get to know her. I liked the way Ms. Cach developed Alex. I didn't feel she gets the reader as involved in his character, but I also think some romance authors give the male characters too many female thoughts, feelings, and actions. I thought Alex handled this whole thing "like a man" might, he's pretty arrogant, doesn't understand women, and prefers to hang around men. I do recommend this book, felt it was well written, and I think anyone can enjoy the story line and humor.

5.0 out of 5 stars a warm haunting story!, Oct 18 2000

The legend has it that Maiden Castle was haunted with the ghost of Serena. A young woman that had been forced to wed, murdered her husband on her wedding night, then plummeted to the bottom of the stairs, breaking her neck, when she tried to flee.

For 500 years Serena has been content to have the castle all to herself. Over the years she has had to get rid of those that dared to disturb her peace, especially the male gender. She was protective of the castle but mostly of the blooming cherry tree in the garden.

Alex Woding had stayed one night in the castle ruins when he was ten years old and had an encounter with a star shower and a ghost. This caused his fascination with astronomy and with the crumbling ruins of Maiden Castle. Thus in manhood he has the castle restored and with an all male crew to run his household, he moves in.

Serena will not put up with so many members of the opposite sex staying in her castle.....even that Woding man that she soon realizes is the little boy that she had scared in his youth. Only now he is a grown man and possibly even different from any other man she has ever known. What's a ghost to do with this situation?

This is a very enjoyable book! Serena's ghostly antics to rid the castle of the male occupants were quite humorous which eased the seriousness of the story. A very enjoyable and touching love story out of the ordinary. Highly recommended read so close to Halloween.

5.0 out of 5 stars For anyone ever faced with an impossible relationship, Oct 11 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Of Midnight Born (Mass Market Paperback)
Set in the 19th century, Of Midnight Born finds Alex Woding seeking to escape his childhood filled with sisters, only to move to a castle with a ghost who deliberately haunts only men. How these two individuals get over their own preconceptions makes an amusing tale, filled with engrossing characters and supporting pets that create an atmosphere as only Ms. Cach's books can. Firmly grounded in the reality of daily life, yet based on a magical premise, this book examines the problems of impossible relationships by putting a whole new twist on it
