I was really exicted about this book at first because tomented heros and the caring heroines who save them like in "Jane Ayre" but I was very disappointed in this book. Yes the hero, Gideon is a tormented soul and the heroine, Lucinda is a very caring loving woman who wants to heal him and love him like he deserves, but the characters were blah. They didn't seem to be fully developed. Also the story was a bit rushed at the end. I would have liked the reason for Gideon's torment to be looked into more and maybe showed his feelings of torment and how Lucinda eased that torment more. I just didn't really enjoy this book very much. It had potential but fell short of it.

I'll admit when I got this book I was expecting a vampire (or something like a vampire) to be in it. But you know what... I wasn't dissapointed to find that wasn't the case. (I won't spoil it for those who haven't read it, but I will say the guy isn't undead or immortal <G>) It was a great book.

I tried. I swear I did, but I just did not like this book. I bought this book when it came out, and IMMEDIATELY traded it at the used bookstore. I skipped pages, I walked off for hours during the time I was reading it. I just could not get interested in it. Frankly, I was surprised to read the other reviews customers wrote about it. I didn't believe that the characters really cared for one another. It was all too strained for me. I like Gothic Romances, but this one I didn't. The only reason I didn't give it one star is because I did at least try and finish the book. I doubt I will be reading any books by Ms. Rogers in the future. This will most likely be the first and the last book I'll read by her. Sorry, but I just didn't like it.

Evelyn Rogers DEVIL IN THE DARK can be compared to an artist with a brush. She paints a masterpiece with her broad, descriptive writing talent. It actually enables the reader to see each scene as it unfolds right before their very eyes. A very powerful Gothic romance which has all the elements to compete against other classic, well-known Gothic legends.

Gideon Blackthorne, Duke of Ravenswood, is a man of dark mystery. His eyes reveal the injustices life has forced him to endure. Nicknamed by townspeople as the "Devil Duke," he lives up to that name by taking midnight rides to escape his tormented soul. On one of his haphazard rides he meets his new neighbor, Lucinda Fairfax. In her he sees the one person who can save his soul from the demons which plague his body.

I just finished reading Devil in the Dark and HAD TO WRITE. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!! Of all Ms. Rogers' wonderful books that I have read, this is my ALL-TIME FAVORITE! I was thrilled with and by it from beginning to end.

Without doubt, Devil in the Dark holds its own at the very top with such classic Gothic romances as Nine Coaches Waiting and Menfreya in the Morning.

Ms. Rogers has a definite flair for writing Gothics and I can't wait to read another one written by her. Devil in the Dark is definitely going on my Keepers shelf!

Ladies, if you love Gothic romance, whatever you do, DON'T miss this fantastic new book!

As a long-time avid fan of Victoria Holt, I was thrilled to see a resurgence of the old gothics.

I picked up DEVIL IN THE DARK with a little trepidation, wondering if I would love it as much as my cherished oldies--and I did!

Tall, dark and enigmatic Gideon is the perfect tortured hero. And the not-quite-so-innocent Lucinda is his ideal counterpart as they race across the mist-enshrouded Yorkshire moors exploring their passion and unravelling a deep, dark secret.

All you Victoria Holt fans, rejoice! Ms. Rogers has penned a new classic--one you will place in spot of honor on your keeper shelf.

Lucinda Fairfax has inherited her father's estate in England. Her father had abandoned her and her mother in U.S. when Lucinda was a tot. Curious about who her father was, Lucinda travels to Craven Manor in Yorkshire to try and find out why he never came back to America. Why he never cared about her.

Upon arriving Lucinda is almost rundown by Gideon's horse. It's love at first sight for these two. Gideon is Lucinda's neighboring Duke spoke of as the devil among all in Yorkshire. Wherever Gideon is, trouble follows. Gideon has a dark secret, a secret so terrible, it keeps him running away from Lucinda's love. The rumors and gossip Lucinda hears from all about Gideon has her wondering if maybe he's to blame for her father's death.

This was a mediocre book. After hearing the history behind Gideon you can figure out what's really going on. Some of the dialogue written in here is reminiscent to one of those horrible Calvin Klein perfume commercials.

The author admits that this book has it roots in the dark tortured Bronte romances. Her devil duke is as brooding as Heathcliff and as passionate as Mr Rochester. Misty moors and dangerous secrets weave an excellent back drop for the love story of a reluctant American heiress. I enjoyed the fact that the author wastes no time in bringing the lovers together. Neither denied their passions only events outside their control built barriers to keep them apart. While the duke's secret was easy to guess I found the knowledge enhanced the suspence. The reader who guesses will be left wondering who is who and when making the most passionate love scene a possible disaster. I highly recommend this book to all gothic fans.
