5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I loved this book! It was playful and serious at the same time (the hero has to stop the destruction of the universe as he knows it -- and has as much trouble believing that as you do). The hero will remind older readers of a slightly doofy version Kimball Kinnison (right down to the breeding program that produced him) but with a much better sense of humor. As he...

this book was horrible; i loved 'Emergence' but didn't really like the whole parrot thing in that book - this book expands on the idea and creates a whole new world where everything is as stupid as can be. it's quick (too quick), witty (trying too hard), and the ending is just plain dumb.

i can understand why there's only one book in this 'trilogy', and thankfully...

As he develops throughout this multiphase book, you like him more and more for his resourceful handling of what Palmer throws at him. I'm only sorry that Palmer has disappeared! What a loss to the SF world. His other novel, Emergence, was a real page turner as well. Please, Mr. Palmer, come out of retirement and finish this story!

5.0 out of 5 stars Threshold, April 26 2000

A Mind-Blowingly good read. A writer this good comes along very rarely. This guy is easily the equal of Terry Pratchett. He makes you feel like your experiencing the story close-up. It is a great blow to science fiction that has apparrently written "only" the two books.

PS: His books are impossible to find copies of here in Australia, I had to get my copy of Threshold over the net from the US. (Total cost A$17.40)including postal charges

Still haven't got a copy of Emergence, Have to read mum's copy.

...and when you do put it down, someone takes it! I've had two copies swiped from me! I, too, read this after reading EMERGENCE. I was a *tiny* bit disappointed in comparison, but never fear! The scenario is fascinating, and the plot twists will keep you guessing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth searching for, Dec 15 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: THRESHOLD (Mass Market Paperback)
I first read this shortly after 'Emergence' and I loved every page. The characters are fun, exciting, a little sexy (where appropriate) and generally come over as the sort of people we would like to be (but rarely are) and associate with (but rarely have the opportunity to do). I've since reread it several times and am saddened to head that the Author may have passed away before finishing the series. If this is so. the authors memory surely deserves someone taking up where he left off (anyone think they're up to it?). Read and enjoy (if you can find it!). It's worth the search.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, but was it the last?, Nov 29 1999

Threshold is one of those books that you just can't stop reading. By that I mean at least once a year for the last 10 years. David Palmers novel Emergence was excellent, however, its plot & story lead to a limited set of readers, Threshold I felt appealed to a larger number of readers, as it has elements of fantasy, science fiction & a little of the occult with its deliberatly mis-spelled references to witches, wards, familiars, etc. Unfortunatley, there are no sequels to this book, as I have heard (but not confirmed) that the author passed away before completing the 2nd & 3rd books. If it's true, the genre has lost a truly gifted author and I for one will keep on re-reading his material for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars this book is addictive, I want more!!!!, May 9 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: THRESHOLD (Mass Market Paperback)
I enjoyed this book tremendously & I have searched in vain for the following volumes. It is very entertaining, witty & whimsical & I wish that the author had continued to write. He has the same greatness as the big name writers like Heinlein, Asimov, etc all have. He makes you laugh & he has a good imagination, Mr Palmer, if you read this, please finish the trilogy, thank you from a satisfied reader.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining story, more fantasy than science fiction, Mar 27 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: THRESHOLD (Mass Market Paperback)
This story take a uniquely simple premis and and expands it in a very interesting and entertaining way. I admit the author does go a little extreem in many of the situation. Yet I have dreamed of very similar senarios. I have read the book many times and eagerly anticipate the sequel

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!, Feb 25 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: THRESHOLD (Mass Market Paperback)
I read this book years ago and continued looking for a sequel which never appeared. In spite of that problem, the story was presented in an excellent manner with great characters. If a sequel ever materializes, I will still be glad to read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superlative Science Fiction - why is this out of print?, Feb 15 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: THRESHOLD (Mass Market Paperback)
As the first book of a planned trilogy, the excellence of Threshold makes me wonder why the two following books have never been published (and why this book is out of print)! David, if you read this (and I hope that you do) *please* write more, lots more. Your work is easily on par with the masters of the genre and should be as extensive as possible. I *highly* recommend Threshold to all as it is an exciting story told in the most entertaining way. David's turn of a phrase is most enjoyable and his characters are loveable to a fault - if often in somewhat over their heads. Threshold and David's previous book Emergence are two of the best books I have ever read in the genre of Science Fiction.
