3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source for Self Reference
I found this book to be quite interesting. However, it did seem to emphasize the negative aspects of almost all of the personality types. Thus the 3 stars. It is probably the best beginners book for the enneagram. It goes into a lot of detail regarding the types, wings, etc.

This book is greatly helpful for most people except those who are caught up with religious doctrines without being able to understand the spiritual message behind the doctrines.

This book focuses on sanctification (transformation), it provides a road map to help us transform spiritually into loving individuals. Love and compassion comes from spiritual maturity instead of power of our will. Therefore, the wisdom from this book is consistent with any religion that promotes love.

On the other hand, for those who are caught up with justification doctrines, this book will not be appealing. Justification for the well being of ourselves works against the spiritual path towards being a loving person. Therefore, at the onset, anyone who is entrenched in the justification mentality would likely believe this book portrays a path away from justification.

This book points out some important aspect of the reality of our existence. It is most useful for those who are (1) out of balance spiritually, or (2) are interested in rediscovering the rich experience of life. The intention of the authors is to help readers to deepen their spirituality through expanding awareness. When spirituality deepens, we become more connected with others. This is the unpreached message because it happens automatically. When understood properly, this book provides a roadmap towards enlightenment. Make sure you read the intro chapters because they well explain how the types are personalities that we should NOT identify with. Also, this book is a resource book more than a quick read, to master the stuff outlined in there could take a life time. The best reading approach is to read slowly from the beginning and stop when we feel like we've chewed off just a little too much for our daily practice.

It's so true when the authors say we identify with our personality in order to get a sense of our identity, but doing so disconnects us from our true Essence because personality is simply a set of habits developed as coping mechanisms.

At this price, I've bought 2 copies beyond my own to give to two of my friends already. I'll be getting more.

When this book is truly lived out, I suspect life would be full of awe like the time when we were a child again, except now we have an adult mind. It could be a bliss, but obviously it's just my projection, I'm no where close.

This book has helped me out of depression (symptom of a dysfunctional 4)and compulsive thinking (symptom of a dysfunctional 5) already. Hope others might find useful insight as well. This is the best Enneagram book I've come across so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life...really, Mar 29 2004

I have been looking for insight into my life (I'm a type four go fig) for what seems like an eternity. This book shined a giant flashlight of truth right in my eyes and to this day refuses to take it away. It even pegged everyone in my family down to our manipulations and quirks. Not Astrology, hell this book blows astrology out of the water! Get and it WILL change your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un livre complet, Feb 19 2004

4.0 out of 5 stars A good start, Jan 6 2004

This review is from: The Wisdom of the Enneagram: The Complete Guide to Psychological and Spiritual Growth for the Nine Personality Types (Paperback)
This book has good insight into the personality types and can really open your eyes. It has a chapter for each type with a quiz at the beginning, quotes, levels of development, descriptions of behaviors or preoccupations, tips for breaking free of them, and profiles for each wing and variant. I found it very informative and easy to read, so I would recommend it to beginners. The only problem for me was that at the end of each chapter, it goes into this mystical talk about spiritual growth and "Essence." That may appeal to some, but it got on my nerves. (For someone who merely wants to the system from a logical viewpoint without so much spiritual mumbo-jumbo, ... Aside from that, this is a great book.

The answer is yes. I can easily say this book will astound you. This is NOT a cult book. Now that that's out of the way, buy this book, pass it around. I am not exagerrating when I say that this bok will show you things that you never even knew about yourself. This book will at LEAST challenge you. Basically, this is a self-discovery book, and you'd be amazed at how little you know about yourself. Give the Enneagram a shot, and do it with this book. This is by far my favorite Enneagram book and I HIGHLY recommend it for beginners.

Incredible work! This is THE BEST Enneagram book available, combining the psychology of the personalities with the spiritual force at work in all of our lives. This powerful combination allows the reader to move from mere typing of themselves or others to an actual practice of learning to release him or herself from their ego mind. This book is the real stuff, a true gem from gifted spiritual Teachers who come from a place of understanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars A TOP NOTCH ENNEAGRAM BOOK!, Aug 20 2001

Amongst the myriad of books about personality, The Wisdom of the Enneagram stands out as one of the most clear, focussed, and nurturing.

I love the charts, graphs, and explanations about high/low level functioning of the types as well as the easy flow used when describing an intricate theroy. This really should be required reading for all -- would improve all types of relationships and help reduce the divorce rate!

For the person looking for answers about his or her life choices, this is a good place to begin.

I am the biggest arm chair shrink in the world. This was my first book and I always go back to it for reference. Forget the "annegram" reviews. This is a book about personality types. This book clearly shows the nine personality types and explains them from healthy to unhealthy behavior. I cannot stress enough the importance of this book. If you are ever going to understand yourself and others you must know the pyschological basis of personalities. You will be writing down all of your friends and family names on the pages where they correspond. By doing so, you will be able to deal with difficult people and in an awe inspiring moment, be able to identify yourself and why you are the way you are. It is an amazing book and Riso is one of my all time favorite authors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best for beginner and expert, April 28 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Wisdom of the Enneagram: The Complete Guide to Psychological and Spiritual Growth for the Nine Personality Types (Paperback)
As someone who believes the Enneagram is the most profound and practical way of understanding ourselves and others, I use the Enneagram to help me increase personal and spiritual growth, enhance my work as a psychotherapist, and relate & communicate more appreciatively with others. Wisdom of the Enneagram is my favorite Enneagram book and the one I reccomend for both beginners and experts (though Don and Russ's other books are 5 star as well). I'm constantly impressed by how Don Riso and Russ Hudson can write such a comprehensive far ranging book of great depth and make it so readable and appealing. Especially since it is so well organized with many very interesting tables, charts, and sections; this is a book you will read and refer to again and again.
