Not Great. (Sorry!),

This review is from: Public Secrets (Mass Market Paperback)
There aren't many books by NR that I don't like, as she is so talented and writes on a variety of informed topics, i.e. ballet, horse racing, Irish history, among just a few.But this one wasn't rich in its story and the characters failed to ring true, especially to their professions. For instance, I never could accept Brian in the role of lead singer for a band, he just didn't fit this profile at all. And I wanted to feel his music, his singing, but that never happened. We readers should have felt the music as if we were in the audience, or at least off stage. In most of NR's books, the reader truly comes to know the characters, but not so in this one. Brian and the rest were dull, and I really didn't like the way this story unfolded.

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time and the BEST book I have read by Nora Roberts. This story was not at all what I was expecting. Nora Roberts is constantly suprising me with her character variety. Almost every chapter introduces or resolves another mystery. Only during the first 50 or so pages was I struggling to stay entertained. This was only due to the character introductions. Then I couldn't stop reading! I highly recommend Public Secrets!

Good but a Little Long,

I enjoyed this book although there were some times when I couldn'd read it anymore, because it was just depressing with the drugs, child abuse, and the only family Emma ever had scattered. I was able to connect to the characters, they all seemed quite real to me, and it was a good story although they were a few places where it seemed like a soap opera that was never going to end. There were parts of this book that were not necessary at all to the point of the story. Yet despite it all, I couldn't stop reading it, I was hooked from the moment I picked it up. Once the book finally got around to issue of Emma and Michael it was sweet book, but there but things that didn't belong. An enjoyable book, but it was just to long in parts that didn't belong

Nora outdid herself with this story. Public Secrets is more of a family saga than a traditional romantic suspense novel, although there is romance and there is plenty of suspense. It follows the McAvoys, through the eyes of Emma, from the time she is three years old, through childhood, the school years, marriage, and adulthood. All this against the background of the life of rock-and-roll legends. It is fascinating and compelling. I simply couldn't put it down.

This book had two love stories in one. Brian and Bev and Brian's daughter Emma and Michael, the cop. Both love stories were very touching and you will fall in love with both Brian and Michael. Michael is an amazing hero. There is romance, suspense and a few surprises. You won't be able to put it down. One of Robert's best! Don't miss it.

it was also the first Nora Roberts book I read, I guess it holds the standard of what I expect from Roberts- GREATNESS. I love this book! In fact, it is the only book that I have read more than twice. I love the concept of the book and how it's centered around the music world. I love how the book spans the time of Emma at 3 into an adult and her life changes through all her experiences and the reader is able to understand mistakes and choices she makes through past events in her life. The romance was great, and the mystery part as well, but I loved just the general way that Roberts wove the story. I have read quite a few (getting close to all) of her books and I still love this one the best. Next to Public Secrets, Genuine Lies would have to be my next favorite... then maybe Where the Rivers Ends, where the main characters love story kind of reminds me of Emma and Michael. Read this book- you won't regret it!

Dark but such a good read,

This is the third Bantam books of Nora that I have picked up and read (the others were Carnal Innocence and Sacred Sins). I found this book dark, as it was dealing with child abuse, domestic abuse, drugs, gay, and AIDS. However, I also found it as a good read. The life of the 4 friends forming a rock group, Devastation, was a different angle, but nevertheless made it interesting. I also love how Nora unfolded Emma's life as she struggled to be a strong woman, despite the tragedy that happened to her little brother and the abuse that she suffered from her own husband, and accepted Michael, who have loved her since his early manhood. This is a beautiful saga and should not be missed.

This was the best Nora Roberts book that I have read so far. It was so great. I loved the charters. Especially Johnno! I also liked how Emma and Michael kept meeting.Total Fate. I also like how Nora Roberts makes her woman charters strong or if not strong in the begging the end of the book. I liked how she made Emma get through all trail and trepulations in still live happily with the person she loved.
