Another Great Book...
Iris Johansen does it again with another great book that could easily be made into a television movie or series. The novel shows a great command of words and literature. The detective work and mystery are great, but the characterization is superb!

contrary to other reviews, a good book!
i really enjoyed this book. i read the other reviews and even though she's a sappy character, i like the plot and the idea around the facial reconstructions. I also really enjoyed the character logan. worth reading

A Delightful Surprise, Fév 5 2009
After reading some of the negative reviews I was thoroughly prepared to dislike this book and author. I was pleasantly surprised. Eve Duncan and her cast of characters is not as detail oriented as say a Kay Scarpetta or Tempe Brennan novel, but it was a fun read. I enjoyed it so much that I purchased the entire Iris Johansen/Eve Duncan series. Ignore the naysayers, it's an excellent read. I'm glad I discovered the author Iris Johansen.

A Bad Book on Every Count, Jui 4 2004

I've read hundreds of police procedurals, mysteries, thrillers, fictional spy yarns, and horror tales. This is the first, so far as I can recall, that I couldn't bring myself to finish! Besides wasting $10.95 (Canadian) to buy the book, I squandered several hours struggling to reach the end--getting as far as page 328 before giving up. (Another reader-reviewer, less of a martyr than I, wrote that he "threw the book against the wall" at page 300.) I surrendered after learning from a reader that the plot has no closure--essential in this genre. Everything in this novel is substandard: ridiculous plot, boring characters (even their names are dull), plodding story line, tacky--and padded--dialogue. The author has several annoying mannerisms, including her ending many dialogue lines with 3-em dashes, presumably to indicate interruption (or maybe breathlessness). I bought the book expecting to learn something about forensic sculpting, the main character's alleged profession, but there was no evidence the author had done any serious research. It's absurd to compare this author to Patricia Cornwell, whose preparation is meticulous and who is a fine writer. Enough said, as others have made detailed comments. Who so many readers gave this hokey book four or five stars baffles me. I would rate it with NO stars if that was an option.

A great novel of mystery and suspense!, Fév 13 2004
The Face of Deception, by Iris Johansen, is a suspenseful novel telling the story of forensic sculptor Eve Duncan who gets tossed into a no-win situation where she must face death, blackmail, and her toughest decision by far. Fast to speak her mind, one would not imagine Eve to fall victim to bribery; but when a man named John Logan enters the picture, and desperately offers her anything to reconstruct a skull for him, she takes the job without realizing the horror that would befall her.
I would recommend borrowing this novel rather than buying it strictly because you learn information towards the end that will ruin the suspense at the beginning, making it less exciting to read the second time. All readers seeking mystery and suspense should give this book a try as well as those interested in forensic sciences.

Tight, Detailed, but not much thrill!, Nov. 4 2003
I liked the story, but it wasn't exactly a nail biter. I enjoyed the way the story weaved the characters together and each one had good depth. However, the main character seemed too super human. Over all, it was an interesting tail, but it won't keep you awake at night thinking about it.

The Skull Belongs to Which Dead President?, Sep 25 2003
Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan takes skulls and reconstructs the faces that once went with them, attempting to find who the murder victim was, also in hopes of finding her dead daughter Bonnie, so she can finally get closure. Because she's so good at what she does, she's approached by bazillionare John Logan to reconstruct a skull he has, leading her to believe that it's JFK. However, Eve finds out that it's the skull of still another president. Big problem though, because this one's not dead. At least he's not supposed to be.Naturally bad guys go after Eve, who turns to old friend Joe Quinn, a detective in the Atlanta Police Department for aid. This book is the first in a series. This five star suspense thriller had me guessing. I loved it and can happily recommend it.

Who is That Dead President?, Sep 25 2003
Eve Duncan's daughter Bonnie is killed by a serial killer and her body was never found. Eve becomes a forensic sculptor and puts faces on the skulls of unidentified murdered children so their parents can finally take them home. She knows Bonnie is dead, but she's still looking. Kinda gruesome.Billionaire John Logan wants Eve to construct a face to skull he has. She resists, finally assents because someone is pressuring her not to and apparently that same someone doesn't want Eve to succeed. There are many twists and turns in this five star suspense thriller, though some Johansen fans may not be happy as the romance defiantly takes a back seat to the suspense. I loved this book. It's the first in a series and I'm starting the next one tomorrow. Again, this was a great five star read. Reviewed submitted by Captain Katie Osborne

Hey! Where's the cream filling?!, Mars 31 2003
Remember when Hostess ran a recent add campaign where tubby swimmers and old ladies were preyed upon because they looked like Cup-Cakes and Twinkies? After which the poor sharks and bears (understandably disappointed) were left feeling unsatisfied because they were expecting yummy Hostess treats and got fat chicks who can't dress instead.*clears throat* Yeah, well, after reading FACE OF DECEPTION, I feel for those bears and sharks now. While Johansen's book started off interesting enough--admittedly showing real potential in the beginning--Eve Duncan was at best a second rate Kay Scarpetta, Eve Dallas, Stephanie Plum. She whines... a lot. Whining takes up a good 30% of the story so be prepared. Of course, when she's not whining, she's caressing her skeletons, giving them names and...'homes' (don't ask). And if that wasn't bad enough, (and that's pretty bad) there's also her touching love story that 'WASN'T', her inability to deal with anything she doesn't want to hear, and her annoying habit of relating EVERYTHING to her dead daughter Bonnie. If it hadn't been for a few intriguing plot twists, I doubt I would have finished the book at all. Which, looking back, might have been the lesser of the two evils since the ending was so... I don't know... wrong? Unresolved? And I couldn't help but feel a little GYPPED. My recommendation? Read this book ONLY if you have enough money to also buy THE KILLING GAME as well. Otherwise, like me, you're going to be searching for 'missing pages' and 'hidden chapters' that your sure MUST be there SOMEWHERE because no NO ONE would end a book this badly and still get five star reviews.

I was happily surprised..., Janv. 24 2003
The Face of Deception by Iris Johansen is a book that keeps you constantly on the edge of your seat.The book is about a Forensic sculptor whose daughter was kidnapped & murdered. She is trying to get on with her life when a very wealthy man asks for her help in re-constructing a face. But with the money he is offering and his status in society (similar to Bill Gates), there must be a catch...and there is. You'll have to read the book to find out what happens from there. I don't want to spoil anything. But as I mentioned above, it's a really suspenseful book. Time flies as you're reading it. I haven't read Ms. Johansen before, I'm likely to come back to her. I guess there is another stoy featuring this character, Eve Duncan, I'll be sure to check that out. It's not only the suspense that makes this a great book. First, it's a good subject, and written well. Many times writers have a great idea, but doesn't come to fruition. Ms. Johansen does it with finess. Second, the characters are very likable & believable. A definite plus. Lastly, the book is written at a satisfying pace. Not too long, or too short. Perfect. Which is also rare. The Face of Deception actually would make a good movie...
