5.0 out of 5 stars The Real Mother Goose
I purchased this book as a gift for a friend's young child. We still have our early copy of this book which we enjoyed with our children. It is delightfully illustrated. I still quote from it on occasion--just for fun.

Board books are nice in that they are short and durable but in this case, so much of the artwork is missing in a board book version that is really no more than a "best of." Wait until your child is older and get the full version.

I have nothing but fond memories from this book and when I was just browsing and came across this i was estatic! I plan on purchasing this for my son.

I believe that, to those who disliked the "quality" of book because of old times. I believe that you must sit down with your child then and talk about it. This gives you that opportunity to teach your child how "todays life" is different then "olden life," as well as what is expected today. Just because ~you~ do not agree with something does not mean you should 'shelter' your children from it. If you do, then what do they learn?

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the Values You Want to Teach Today, Jan 24 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Real Mother Goose (Hardcover)
I thoroughly agree with the person who said that this was not for today's child. With all that is going on in today's society, with increasing violence among our children, this version of Mother Goose does little to teach children tolerance. When I bought this book, I was expecting cute and innocent children's rhymes. I do not remember reading as a child Mother Goose rhymes that were so gory. Now, in all fairness, not all the rhymes are like that, however, you have to flip through the pages to read those that are more tame. I think many of these rhymes and stories had it's place in centuries past, but not in the 21st century.

I am surprised that non of the other reviewers felt this way, too.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quality just isn't what it used to be, April 24 2001

I bought this for my future child, I remember reading this as a child myself, and have some pretty fond memories. I couldn't find the copy I grew up with so when I saw that I could order this, I was ecstatic. The hard bound cover is nice, and good enough... but the paper quality is extremely cheap and thin, the reprints of the original illustrations have less quality then the sunday comics. Oh Well, what do you expect with merchandise sold and made today.

It would be nice to have the option to pay extra to get the quality that you remember from days of old.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for todays child., April 5 2001

I bought this book for my son thinking it would be like ones I had as a child. When first published in 1916 this book may have been excellent for young children but seems to be out of place and out of date for todays child. In a world where children are teased and exposed to violence this book teaches nothing but contempt. The first story talks of sheep murdered and their tails hung to dry then burried. More on laziness and the fact that being different is bad. Illustrations are poor. Many popular short tails left out. Really not what I expected from Scholastic. No morals teaching stories or modernized grammar like other books. I havn't seen de-moralizing stories since Dumbo and Rudolph the red nosed reindeer. There are better books out there. If I could give negative stars I would. This one is going back to sender.

3.0 out of 5 stars My favorite but only because I grew up with it, Sep 9 2000

This is the Mother Goose that my generation grew up with. This gives it the advantage of containing the rhymes my generation recites with ease. However, if one looks at it objectively, the order of the rhymes is often a result of poem or picture size rather than a comfortable flow ... the equivalent of a DJ ordering the songs by the color of the label. [insert your own argh]

The pictures were quaint when I was growing up. They will continue to appeal to some children but those children will need to be selected careful.

This is a good Mother Goose for Grandma's house but there are better to give the child.

This is the perfect first book to read with baby. Every nursery rhyme is included, and some more. The pictures are delightfully traditional and colorful. Little babies love the black and white checkered cover. I am buying one for my first grandchild. Enjoy!
