I got this book from my school library. At first it took me a while to get into it, but it was wonderful nonetheless. Then as I got more into it, I brought it home and couldn't stop reading it! I fininshed reading the book today, and it is definetely, without a doubt, one of the best reads I've ever read, and that there probably is out there! It is probably my favorite...

This review is from: Sirena (Paperback)
This book was great, I read it for my summer reading and I really enjoyed it. I liked how it raised the question of whether or not Philoctetes loved her for who she was or if he only fell in love with her because he heard her Siren's song. I have to do a poster on the book and I can't seem to remember what the fish were that Sirena was surrounded by before she reached the island and met Philoctetes. Could anyone help me with the name of the fish? I can't get the book out of the library because it's a summer reading book and someone else took it out. Thanks in advance!,

Kayla

2.0 out of 5 stars Strange story, May 22 2004
This review is from: Sirena (Paperback)
Napoli has written numerous enjoyable retellings of folk and fairy tales for the young adult audience. In this book, I felt she faltered. She tells the story of the Greek Sirens (which are pictured to be mermaids).Sirena, the main character, knows that she is cursed, being half-human. The only way to lift the curse is to convince a man to mate with them. Then, she will become immortal. Sirena decides to separate from the other Sirens and finds a castaway alone on an island. They are initially afraid of each other, but begin to fall in love. Will Sirena want to be immortal after falling in love with a human man? I found the story dragging a lot, and perhaps because the story of the Sirens isn't as well known as some of Napoli's other retellings, it seemed a bit boring to me as well. I think she has written better.

I fininshed reading the book today, and it is definetely, without a doubt, one of the best reads I've ever read, and that there probably is out there! It is probably my favorite book. It's full of mystic, myths, and love. And I absolutely love the ocean, so I loved how the main setting was there. I also found Sirena, the mermaid, a great role model that many can relate to. I highly reccommend this book to everyone. I am definetely going to get my own copy! It is absolutely astounding....

4.0 out of 5 stars Sirena, Sirena, Mar 2 2004
This review is from: Sirena (Paperback)
I have read several of Napoli's books, and she has a writing style I've come to appreciate. She sticks with this style in "Sirena", and although I had a bit of a hard time getting into this story, it was good nonetheless.

I didn't like Sirena's character until the end of the book, when she showed she was more mature and wasn't so naive. This book has a lot of references to greek mythology, but it's simple to understand and very interesting. While reading this story, I grew to appreciate the ocean even more, and I must say, if you read this, it would do well to find a beach or fly to one, because you're going to want to lay in the warm sand after!

If you liked 'Zel' or 'Crazy Jack' or any other Napoli book, I totally suggest you read this book.

So my friend was reading this book and the cover got my intrest. SOon after I read Sirena and now heres what I think. The overall idea for this story was excellent. I thought Sirena was intresting so I put it in my guide. Now there is a basic conflict here, the reading level for this is probaly around ten or eleven but it has content of like 16 or 17. A really good mythology book would be Troy.
The plot in Sirena was basic, she needed immortality but was not as cruel as her sisters so she swam away. Then this dude who is destined to kill Paris gets abanded on her island. They are all happy until the guy wants to leave because hes tired of just lying in the middle of nowhere with a siren. So on and so on.
I wouldn't tell you to go right out and buy it but if you could check it out from the Library eventually that would be good.
Thanks for your time and check out my lists and guides.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sirena, Feb 27 2004
This review is from: Sirena (Paperback)
Sirena Scholastic Signature, 1998,
210 pages,, ISBN 0-590-38389-2
Donna Jo Napoli

Immortality, the chance to have no pain, no death and no physical pains what so ever. To live happily with you sisters, and swim in the sea forever. This is all Sirena has ever dreamed of. But this privilege has to be earned, as all good things in life. A mortal man must love her, even though she's a mermaid. When the day comes, will she sing that song that makes men go weak in the knees, or will she risk dieing, to have a relationship with the man who could be, the man of her dreams.

The authors craft was happening minute by minute, and was always in Serena's perspective. When you combine these two techniques of writing, not much excitement can happen. But the original plot makes mythology lovers wishing there was more.

1.0 out of 5 stars Depressing, Nov 14 2003
This review is from: Sirena (Paperback)
What happend to happily ever after? A depressing story. It ends bad, and through out the book sirena is discontent because she doesnt know what the man (A forgot his name) is doing. ANd he spends most of his time on land... It is an okay book I supose but not worth your money or your time. If you want to read it go to the library.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Fantasy/Romance Story, Oct 12 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Sirena (Paperback)
I read this book in half a day. And not because it is an easy book that one can get through quickly, it is because it such a wonderful story that makes you want to know the ending.

I really loved the idea of the story, and usually I don't go for the terrible romance stories but Sirena was a great tale and I really felt sad for it to end. The story tells of a seventeen year old mermaid named Sirena, who lives with her sisters on an island where they try to sing to the passing ships and win the love of sailors so to bestow upon themselves immortality.

After witnessing the deaths of a crew of men after they crashed they boats upon their island, Sirena swims away to another called Lemnos where she rescues a dying man who has been abandoned by his men. I can't say any more without ruining the story but take my word for it, Sirena is an awesome book and I recommend it for ages 12 and up.
