5.0 out of 5 stars Best in the series
Well, it's a really good book, and an exellent addition to the circle of magic, and my favorite. Even though Tris, Daja, and Sandry aren't included in this book, it is still really good.
In this book I think it really shows how powerful Briar really is. in all the other books, Tris was the powerful one, but Briar is here to give her a run for her money as he works...

2.0 out of 5 stars A let down
I loved the Magic Circle series, and couldn't wait for these books to come out. I'm sorry to say it was a let down. I think Pierce is losing her touch, or is puting less time into her books, because these recent ones are not full of her regular magic. To cover it up, she adds more violence. For me, that's an ugly substitute. Read the other Tamora Pierce books, but...

It's been a few years since these four mages met and learned their magic together. They have all left Winding Circle, and gone with their mentors.
Briar and Rosethorn are travelling the world! Ok, maybe not entirely, but that's ok. This story takes place mostly in a single city. A nice city - but like all cities, it has its ups and downs.
Thieves, a stone mage girl, and plots that need foiling.
Briar has to earn the trust of the girl, then help her learn her magic - after teaching her to read and write.
But he's not the only one who's trying to befriend the girl - though the others have other, not so pleasant, ways of making 'friends'.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for any fantasy fan!, Sep 9 2003

My favorite of the Circle Opens Quartet, is Street Magic. It involves a lot of conflicts inside of Briar, between the street rat, Roach, and the mage, Briar Moss. Kind of odd every once in a while, but in an interesting fantasy mystery type way. Great Book!

I really like this book. It is a welcome improvment from the Circle of Magic series. This book has lots of adventure, which is what I love about Tamora Pierce's books. A good plot, I like how Tamora also told about what the emeny thought and did. In this book, Briar and Rosethorn travel to Chamuni. There Briar meets Evvy, who has stone magic. He learns he must not only teah her, but protect her from the street gangs what want to use her for her power.

I loved this book! Evvy is a wonderful character, and Chammur is fascinating and a much better setting than many of T.P.'s other settings. I love what was done with Briar and Rosethorn in this book. Briar is more grown-up, but he's still the Briar we all know and love (no way could he grow up so much that he wouldn't needle people). Rosethorn is the same as ever, except maybe a bit more interesting and emotional (not that she shows it). Except maybe for Kethlun, Evvy is the best character in this series. I love her cats, and her views of Briar and Rosethorn are interesting. She almost seems like Tris, in a way, and Tris, although weird, is probably the smartest of the Circle.
I am glad to own this book, and would suggest that you buy it too, if you like T.P. books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Street Magic Rocks, Mar 4 2003
By A Customer
Street Magic is very good. Briar is a wonderful character and deserves to have student much like him. Evvy -Briar's student- is an ambient rock mage and street rat like Briar was. This has lots of Briar's past, so to speak, concerning gangs. I did not enjoy this as much as Cold Fire or Shatterglass, but it is still wonderful. Everyone should read Tamora's works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Street Magic, Dec 12 2002
This book about Briar Moss (Plant Mage from Circle of Magic series) and the problems he runs into while he is in Chammur and this time the girls aren't there to help him! He deals w/ gangs, subborn stone mages, cats, and a girl who he finds that has stone magic. One top of it all he has to teach her. I love this book! Briar is one of my favorite characters and this book is all about him. Who wouldn't love it?

4.0 out of 5 stars Another winner, Nov 3 2002

STREET MAGIC, the second book of Pierce's The Circle Opens quartet, is a story which ought to satisfy all of her fans and leave them asking for more. Still far from being one of Tamora Pierce's best books, STREET MAGIC continues her trend of bringing the books in The Circle Opens quartet to a more mature level.

Briar Moss and his teacher Rosethorn have traveled to the city of Chammur, where they are employed to revive the plants dying in the "tired" earth. It is while he is visiting one of the open Bazarrs there that Briar comes across Evvy, a young street-rat who in unknowingly in possession of stone magic. As with Sandry in MAGIC STEPS, Briar suddenly finds himself responsible for Evvy when the only other stone mage in the city flatly refuses to teach Evvy, or at least to do so in an acceptable manner. On the side, Briar must deal with the escalation of a multi-gang war going on throughout the city.

As I said, this is far from being one of the best books by Tamora Pierce, but I found it to be not half-bad. I like how she is bringing more dimensions to the lives of the four Winding Circle Mages, and making her stories more complex, mature, and different.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES, Oct 6 2002
By
Ok, I have got to be one of Tamora Pierce's biggest fans. Although I'm about the same age Briar is in this book, I also love the Circle of Magic books. The kids are ten, but they act a lot older. That said, this book is also great! The characters are well developed and likeable (one of my best friends wants to go out with Briar). Evvy is cool too, and one of the great thing about this book is- IT HAS CATS!! Magic Steps didn't have any good animals in it, but this one does! It's cool to see how Evvy survived all alone on the streets. The plot is very good too. Overall, if you want to read a superb fantasy book that this one is great!!
