4.0 out of 5 stars Small And Good
When I need to do a quick check on something I open this book, I find it can be faster than waiting for a site to open up with the CSS reference, its not completely comprehensive but that is not the point. That is what web based references are for, this is a quick way to look something up faster than that, portable enough that you can toss it in your laptop bag or even...

While this reference has all the information you'd need about CSS up to version 2.1, it could be organized far more intelligently. The first section is pretty useful with quick explanations about floating rules, positioning rules, and the box model. Yet the actual property descriptions are very poorly done. All properties are presented in a flat and repetitive alphabetical list. When it comes to the border properties, for example, it wastes 15 pages listing every variation from border-bottom-color through to border-right-width. The description is identical for each one.

Another problem is that each heading is on a different part of the page making it very difficult to flip through to find what you need, and properties are not grouped at all. So this means that text properties like "line-height" are nowhere near "text-align." Position properties are similarly scattered, with 48 pages separating the "bottom" and "top" properties. It would have made a lot more sense to group properties into categories, or at least provide a categorical table of contents. All you get is an equally useless alphabetical index at the back.

I recommend you make your own reference or find something better, because this one really isn't worth using.

That is what web based references are for, this is a quick way to look something up faster than that, portable enough that you can toss it in your laptop bag or even netbook case and use. Just enough for what I need it for, I know CSS but every now and then when I like to make sure of something, this book is perfect and quick.

I purchased this as an easy reference book for when I'm designing sites, and I use it all the time.
