5.0 out of 5 stars 6 kids must all depend on eachother for survival.
Six children are sent to a boat (Pheonix) in the Pacific Ocean to learn discipline. It's either that or jail. Luke is pretty much the leader and the most sensible amongst the group. Six children are sent to a boat (Pheonix) in the Pacific Ocean to learn discipline. It's either that or jail. Luke is pretty much the leader and the most sensible amongst the group. He was sent the Pheonix because he was accused of having a gun at school. Lyssa and Will were sent to the Pheonix because they would have so many fights and arguments over stupid things(once they almost killed eachother)and would never get along. Charla, the athletic girl, who is perfect in every way was sent to the Pheonix because her parents thought it would be a good experience for her. Ian was sent to the Pheonix because he watched too much tv and needed to get a taste of the outdoors and J.J. (the son of a famous movie star) was sent to the Pheonix because he broke the law a number of times and it was decided that he should leave town for awhile. These kids are on a boat together with an encouraging captain and the "Ratface" Radford who finds all the kids worthless in every way. Disaster strikes and everything goes even more downward then it already was. The group of kids must depend on eachother to survive.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book!, Dec 10 2006
By
Please don't let the other reviews dissuade you from reading this fantastic book! The first in a truly magnificent series, this book is highly addictive. It is about a program for troubled youth that involves a month long seafaring trip across the Pacific Ocean. All of the kids are there against their will, but when drastic circumstances force them to come together and pool their resources to survive, they begin to work as a team.

My favorite charachter was Luke, I thought he was very empathetic and didn't deserve to be on that trip at all!

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting adventure, Feb 2 2004
By A Customer
My 9 year old 3rd grader (girl) read this book and found it thrilling. (So of course I had to read it too!) She can't wait to read the 2nd book. A bit reminiscent of "Holes" (though not of the literary quality/depth), a group of kids, each with a unique situation, is sent on a sailboat trip to learn teamwork. Disaster (after disaster) strikes and they are in a struggle for their lives.

4.0 out of 5 stars Island, Jan 21 2004
By A Customer
This book Island is a good book to read. The characters are J.J, Luke, Ian, Will, Lyssa, and Carla. Carla is a aflet, Will and Lyssa are related,Ian is small,Luke and J.J are rivals.
Its were these kids who are bad go.They`re on a ship and the ship sinks. An they are shipwrecked on a log in the ocean. They haven't had food or water in days. They want it to rain because they want fresh water.
If you like survival books you should get this book. this book is nonfiction.

3.0 out of 5 stars ALL ALONE, Jun 17 2003
By A Customer
Author: Gordon Korman
Pages: 128
Genre: Adventure
Setting: Unknown Island

The setting of Island is on a deserted island in the middle of the ocean. The characters are Luke, J.J., Will, Lyssa, Charia, and Ian. Luke likes to make fun of people. He has tried to abandon the team by escaping. Their main problem is that a big storm on a boating trip hits them and the kids are the only ones to survive, but they are shipwrecked.
They need to work together to think of ideas and ways to survive. Will comes up with an idea to get logs and spell HELP. Then they start a fire because the smoke will direct airplanes and helicopters to the island.
This series is predictable because the main characters always seem to live and have a happy ending. I can guess that book threeï¿s ending will be when the team gets rescued. The sequel title would be The Shipwreck Curse! I would recommend this book to any book reader that enjoys adventures. Kormanï¿s other series, Everest, was also a thriller! My favorite part is when Luke scares J.J.
I like Kormanï¿s style of writing because it is exciting and intense. If I was the main character I would have started a fire and draw a picture in the sand of people getting shipwrecked so they know what happened. This book reminded me of the movie STRANDED.

3.0 out of 5 stars Island, Jan 24 2003
By A Customer
I thought that it was o.k. It was kinda boring 'cause there was a ship wreck and they all lived no injuries no nothing. I did'nt like the names.I don't think that Luke should of been there in the first place. And nether should Will 'cause the sister started most of the fights. I don't know what the plot is. I also don't know what the meaning is. So I don't like the book. there was'nt much excitment. Thats why I give it 3 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Island book#1, Nov 26 2002

This review is from: Shipwreck (School & Library Binding)
6 kids who are total strangers are on a boat called the Phoenix for punishment. For doing things such as law breaking, sibling wars, spreading themself too thin, being a coach potato, and just
a plain brat. But things aren`t as bad as they seem, they're worse!

4.0 out of 5 stars From Hannah...., May 27 2002

I like the book because it had lots of adventure in it. The one thing I would have liked better about the book is if they had all 3 books in one so you don't have to buy them all seperate. I am doing a bookreport on this book for my school as a book I'd suggest to my classmates for Summer reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars ISLAND Book One : SHIPWRECK, May 19 2002
By
Seth T. (Yakima , WA USA) - See all my reviews
This book as one of the most adventuress novels I have ever read. It was most exciting when Captain Callahan died because of all of the chaos that went on. The reason that I rated this book only 4 stars was because the ending was not very exciting, they got on the island and that was it the end. I think it would have been better if the author would have made some mention of Will regaining his consciousness. I also think it was very good when the villain, Mr. Radford, left the kids marrooned on the sinking ship, because that is when the kids had to depend on themselves for survival instead of some other person. I really enjoyed this book and recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure from 10-16.
