Terrible,
By Barbara (New Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Paperback)
This was really a bad book. I mean the story line was alright its just that the characters were so uninteresting and flat. The main character kept switching back and forth between a really mentally retarted kid and a normal teenager. There were parts that were extreamly unrealistic and just plain stupid. I do not recomend this book.

This was probably the worst book I have ever read. It was not interesting, the writing was horrible. It was a drag to finish this book. I didn't like it at all, and was suprised at the reviews.

I really didn't like this book. The main character was emotionally disturbed and he was really hard to relate to. He was practically a social outcast, and this book made me cringe because he was so naive. Charlie was so immature and stupid, but the book tries to make him seem gifted.

Yes, it's cliche,
This review is from: The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Paperback)
We get it.The book is built on cliches. It quotes banned books. It talks about cheesy moments. And somewhere, deep down, it probably reminded us of our high school days. Unlike some of the negative reviews, I enjoyed the way that Charlie changed. It showed that he wasn't a static, boring kid. Yes, we change our minds. We change our personalities to fit situations. I really enjoyed this novel. I wasn't bored by it at any moment because Charlie seemed so normal, and so real. I'm not terribly excited by the movie because it's rated PG-13, and that means that they're going to cut out most of the good parts.

IT MAY EVEN CHANGE YOUR LIFE,

THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER is amazing. It is my favorite book for about a year, mainly because I haven't read anything that can top it yet (except for THE LOSERS CLUB by Richard Perez -- which came close). I heard about this book through the internet. My friends always went on about it and I was always seeing quotes and pictures from it.. etc. I was again, searching for something to read that would hold my interest, and I just happened to think of this. I finally clicked on Amazon, got it a week later, and finished it that night. The way it's written makes it easy to absorb. I couldn't believe how great it was. In a way, I guess you could say that the book changed my outlook on life. I don't know the exact reason how or why ... but it did. I started thinking differently and doing things differently, getting into different things (writing, music, etc.) and spending more time with my friends. Before all this I was as anti-social as they come. I hated leaving the house and I didn't WANT any friends. I guess after reading about Charlie and Patrick and Sam, and participating ... I decided to value my friends more, (or work to find a friendship like Charlie's and Patrick's and Sam's) and try to participate. And I guess it worked. But that's not the point. PERKS is a great book. Maybe it will change YOUR life. You won't know until you read it. Click on Amazon, right now; it's worth your time. Also, I have to say thanks to the reviewer who suggested that other novel, THE LOSERS CLUB: Complete Restored Edition by Richard Perez, another great, enjoyable book that got under my skin, that I can't stop thinking about. (Best "used" book I ever bought!) PERKS and THE LOSERS' CLUB are now a permanent part of my home library.

A Unforgetable Novel!,

This review is from: The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Paperback)
PERKS is such an outstanding novel. After THE LOSERS' CLUB by Richard Perez (which another reviewer recommended), it's the best novel I've read in at least a year! It transcends what is typical and expected for books about awkward teenagers and reaches deeper into the meaning of self discovery. As I read the book, I was finding myself more intrigued by Charlie, the narrator, because he reminds me so much of myself. He's the type of kid that seems so ordinary but has such an extraordinary mind. Charlie is so likeable and anybody can relate to him. He has this unique and rare thought process that is simplistic yet reaches high levels of intrigue and complexity. All the events, both happy and sad, that occur are things that happen to everyday people. Readers can empathize with Charlie and understand Chbosky's tone about the struggles of being a teenager. This is one of the most readable books I've come across and I think teenagers would thoroughly enjoy it, so I highly recommend it. Pick up a copy! Also try THE LOSERS' CLUB (Complete Restored Edition) by Richard Perez, a book I can't stop thinking about after I picked up a "used" copy off Amazon.

It Truly Touched Me -- what can I say?,

This review is from: The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Paperback)
In this day and age when people are so cynical and cruel, it was a pleasure to read a book from the point of view of a genuinely nice person. Charlie is a "wallflower," meaning he stands back timidly watching others live life, afraid to participate. In the course of the novel, we watch Charlie grow: make friends, go to parties, participate, even fall in love -- in other words, come out of his shell. And by the end we discover why Charlie is unable to participate in life until now; we come to understand the source of his pain. I truly loved this book; and I don't care if other people put it down! The chapters are written in letter format, and the writing is smooth and unpretentious. This is definitely the best book I've read since THE LOSERS CLUB: Complete Restored Edition by Richard Perez. And I discovered both books on Amazon. Anyway, if you like genuinely beautiful people, I'm sure you'll love the protagonist of this novel. You may even shed a tear for Charlie...bottom line: you'll be moved!

You owe it to yourself to buy this book right now!,
By Eric Wein (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Paperback)
Charlie, the narrator of the book is a young, shy boy battling problems that so many of us battle, balancing on the fringes between living his life and just merely watching others' lives. Charlie lives in a world full of books, infatuation, marijuana, Rocky Horror Picture Show, family problems and even a friend's suicide. In the barely 200 pages of this book, he experiences the full spectrum of human emotion. The wonderful first-person perspective allows the readers to think just as Charlie is, and more importantly to recognize and evaluate similar situations in their own lives. This book will teach you to cherish every single moment you have, even if the next seems infinitely better. It taught me to live for the moments when I'm sitting in the back seat of my best friend's car, listening to the Smiths and thinking about nothing except how beautiful the streetlights are. And it showed me that sometimes, for just one moment at a time, we really can be infinite. THE LOSERS' CLUB: Complete Restored Edition by Richard Perez, another Amazon purchase, is a second book I recommend very much along these lines. Excellent reading! |
